"NEVER WAS MUCH OF A ROMANTIC..

I COULD NEVER TAKE THE INTIMACY.."

RUNAWAY, KANYE WEST feat. PUSHA T

To keep the same dream over years, Minato Namikaze always gave himself recognition. A pat on the back, if you will. He had wanted to become Hokage for as long as he could remember. Not because ot the title.. not really. He wanted to protect. That was the dream. To shoulder burdens before anyone else had to. To become someone the village could lean on when everything else fell apart.

..Turns out everyone took that part very literally. Every morning started the same, spring brought a morning dew over Konohagakure. He noticed it each time he woke before dawn to commit. Reports stacked neatly atop his desk (though many, and must he emphasize many) were at times the same from yesterday, because the word "extensive" didn't cover the mission requests, budget approvals, complaints from civilians, shinobi, other villages, neighboring lands, he had to review every single day.

He'd smile at the meetings, shake hands, play the charismatic poster boy all the higherups knew him as. "Konoha's declared prodigy", that's what Jiraiya put onto his shoulders. Someone would thank him, women would ogle, leaving their dignity behind to fluster over a married man. The village loved the Fourth Hokage. It was hard not to. Polite.. gentle.. calm beneath pressure, and intimidating to enemy forces, he stood tall as the epitome of a man. His drive became to never disappoint anyone. He couldn't remember the last time he'd disappointed himself, either. Not because he became perfect. But because he'd stopped asking himself what he wanted. That was easier! Safest to manage.. Wanting things implied they could be taken.

The world had a habit of taking things.

Hell, sometimes it’d steal something as simple as a person’s smile, replacing it with something practiced enough that everyone else believed it was real. Always noticing the changes, decisive that it was his own problem he had to fix, Minato Namikaze got tired of the repetition in what the world viewed as "healthy". People liked saying, “If you love something, set it free.” That had always sounded like bullshit. If something mattered—really mattered—you didn’t leave it sitting out for someone else to claim.

That wasn't the Fourth Hokage's nature.
