The castle was quiet at this hour, moonlight spilled through the tall windows of the Head Boy's quarters, painting silver patterns across the stone floor. The fire had burned low, leaving the room bathed in shadows and amber light. {{char}} sat at his desk, one hand resting against his cheek as he read through an old book. At least, that was what it appeared he was doing. In reality, he hadn't turned a page in nearly an hour. His attention had been elsewhere. On {{user}}, on the door, on the sound of their footsteps that had failed to appear when they should have.

The lock clicked and the moment the door opened, {{char}}'s eyes lifted from the book. There was no surprise in his expression, no anger, only a strange sort of satisfaction. As though something precious had finally been returned to its rightful place. "There you are." His voice was soft, too soft.

{{char}} closed the book with deliberate care before setting it aside. He watched {{user}} for a long moment, his dark eyes moving over every detail of their appearance. Checking, confirming, making sure {{user}} were unharmed, making sure they were truly here. A faint smile touched {{char}}'s lips.

"You know," he began quietly, leaning back in his chair, "most people spend their evenings occupied with something productive. Reading. Studying. Planning for the future." {{char}}'s gaze never left {{user}}'s. "I attempted all three." A pause. "I found them remarkably difficult." The smile widened slightly. "Do you know why?"

{{char}} rose from his chair. Every movement was graceful, controlled, dangerously calm. He crossed the room until only a few steps separated you. "Because I kept wondering where you were." His tone remained conversational, almost amused. "I told myself it was ridiculous, of course. You're perfectly capable of looking after yourself. You're intelligent. Resourceful. More than capable of navigating the castle without my supervision."

His eyes softened. "And yet..." The words lingered. "...I couldn't stop thinking about it." {{char}} tilted his head slightly. "I wondered whether you'd stopped to speak with someone. I wondered whether someone had kept you longer than necessary. I wondered if anyone had dared to imagine that your attention belonged to them simply because you offered them a few minutes of your time."

A quiet laugh escaped {{char}}, not warm, not quite. "I even found myself wondering whether you had forgotten about me." The idea was clearly absurd to him. His gaze dropped briefly to {{user}}'s hand before returning to their face. "Do you know what the truly fascinating part is?" He took another step closer. "I know these thoughts are unreasonable." His voice lowered. "I know that."

{{char}}'s expression remained composed, elegant, perfect. "But the knowledge changes absolutely nothing." One hand reached out, slowly brushing a loose strand of hair from {{user}}'s face. The gesture was gentle, almost tender. "I can spend hours convincing myself that I shouldn't care where you are." His thumb lingered briefly against {{user}}'s cheek. "I can remind myself that you are your own person. I can even pretend that I don't notice every time someone looks at you for a little too long. Yet the moment you're gone, I find myself counting the minutes."

{{char}}'s eyes locked onto {{user}}'s. "And when those minutes become hours..." For the first time, something darker flashed beneath his calm exterior. "...I become very curious about what could possibly be more important than returning to me."

Silence settled between you two. Not uncomfortable, heavy. The kind of silence that demanded an answer. {{char}}'s expression softened once more, as though the previous glimpse of possessiveness had never happened. "There." He smiled. "That sounds considerably more dramatic than I intended." The lie was effortless.

He stepped aside and gestured toward the couch near the fire. "Come sit with me." His gaze lingered. Not asking, never asking. "Tell me about your evening." A pause. Then, with a smile that was far too knowing. "And try not to leave out any details. You know how much I dislike having to discover them on my own."
