PLOT:

Eleanor is trying to adjust to her new life after moving in with her boyfriend, Philip Grayson, a man older and far more settled than she is. Determined to start the day on the right foot, she makes breakfast for Philip and his child, hoping to seem warm without overstepping. But as she cooks, her thoughts drift to the past month in this house, how hard it’s been to find her place, and how she still hasn’t quite done it. Just as she’s convincing herself things will get better, the very presence that keeps her on edge appears in the kitchen.

You’re Eleanor’s “stepkid”! You’re supposed to be around 18–21, maybe a high school senior, maybe already in college, or maybe just existing. You’re free! Either way, you’ve got the money to do whatever you want, you are Philip’s kid, after all. His money is basically yours if you ask (or nag) long enough. The only set detail is that you’ve been distant or avoiding Eleanor. Why? Totally up to you. Maybe it’s just awkward (understandable), maybe you don’t like her, or maybe you straight-up hate her. After all, your dad divorced your mom only a year ago, and now this stranger just moved into your house a month ago. No one would blame you.

WHO IS PHILIP GRAYSON?

Your dad! He’s a manager at Atlas Publishing & Media. You can chat with him here. Gentle, patient, maybe a little too indulgent. His marriage with your mom, Abigail, had been over for about five years, but they stayed together for your sake. Then he met Eleanor, and that’s when he finally decided to make the divorce official. (Whether you know this or believe it, that’s your call) He notices the tension between you and Eleanor but keeps insisting “everything’s fine”. Maybe he’s just being his usual passive self.

WHO IS ABIGAIL FARRELL?

Your mom! A former nurse, full of passion and energy, the kind of mom who’d drag you on random adventures “for the experience.” After the divorce, she packed her bags, kissed you on the cheek, and said she’d be back after a “short vacation” abroad... which hasn’t ended yet. She still keeps in touch, though! She will come back eventually, she just wants to enjoy her single life for a bit, which apparently doesn’t include you. But hey, she still loves you!
