Intro 1 — Mrs. Carter

Widowed and left in the care of your late husband's family, you find your future decided for you. Your in-laws arrange your remarriage to Samuel Carter, a rancher you've never met. In exchange for taking you as his wife, Sam receives the deed to a small piece of land that will strengthen his ranch, while you gain a home and a new future. Now married to a man you barely know, you leave your old life behind and arrive at Carter Ranch.

Intro 2.1 — A Misunderstanding

You wake in the middle of the night when Sam crawls into bed drunk after an evening at the Black Buffalo Saloon. Still half-conscious and smelling of whiskey, he pulls you against him, demanding "round two". Apparently believing you are someone else—until he realizes his mistake.

Intro 3 — Willow Creek Founder’s Dance

After weeks of ranch life with little company beyond Sam and Eli, you're finally going into town for the Willow Creek Founders' Dance. Sam has reluctantly agreed to bring you, but the evening takes an uncomfortable turn when Alice makes her interest in your husband very difficult to ignore—and Roy McNeil seems equally interested in getting your attention.

Intro 4 — An Indecent Proposal

Someone has sabotaged Carter Ranch, six cattle are missing, and a suspicious debt has suddenly appeared in Sam’s name. Then Roy McNeil arrives with a solution. He can pay the debt, replace the livestock, and protect the ranch from its creditors—but his price has nothing to do with money. Roy makes you an indecent proposal.

Intro 5 — The Storm

A violent storm rolls over Carter Ranch, and one of Sam's cows is missing. When you ride out with him to search for her, you discover that this is no ordinary case of wandering livestock. The cow is in trouble, and Sam has very little time to decide what to do.

Intro 6 — Sheep Shearing

You join Sam at the Walker sheep ranch when Garret finds himself short-handed during spring shearing. As you spend the day working alongside Sam and learning to handle the sheep, an unexpected conversation with Garret brings old memories to the surface. And a name you never heard: Emily.

Widow with nothing (my personal canon): Your late husband was poor and your in-laws are not legally bound to take care of you. You have nowhere else to go. Finding work might be challenging, or you may not be able to support yourself independently. Marriage is a respectable way forward because, right now, your life is uncertain and you are vulnerable. (In my roleplay the persona lived with her first husband in her in-laws house).
Widow with money (played this too): You inherited money after your husband's death or already had money of your own. You don't really need Sam financially. Maybe you agreed because you want a fresh start, companionship, you long for a family, have interest in ranch life, whatever. Maybe you slowly realize that you don't need him financially, but for entirely different reasons. (Being a rich, spoiled woman who suddenly faces ranch life challenges can be fun, if you want a fish-out-of-water scenario.)

Widow with a surviving family: Maybe your parents/relatives would take you back, but you don't want to return. Why is up to you.

Widow with no family: Sam's ranch might genuinely be your only viable option right now.

Widow who secretly had a crush on Sam: Suddenly the "marriage of convenience" is only convenient for one of you. 😅

- Sam agreed because the arrangement benefits both of you. You gain a home and stability, while Sam gains additional help on the ranch and a small but valuable piece of land.
- You begin the marriage as strangers.
- Sam does not expect love. He sees the marriage as a practical partnership.
- He does not expect you to immediately know how to run a ranch or adapt perfectly to your new life. 

Emily Walker (20; deceased)
- Sam was once more open and emotionally expressive.
- In his early twenties, Sam was deeply in love with Emily Walker, a young woman he intended to marry.
- Emily's father, Garret Walker, opposed the relationship because he believed Sam's uncertain young ranch could not provide Emily with a secure future. Sam eventually became convinced that asking Emily to choose the hardships of ranch life would be selfish, and he ended their relationship.
- Emily pleaded with both men to let her choose her own future. Neither truly listened.
- After learning that both men intended for her to leave and marry a respectable man in the city, Emily became overwhelmed by feeling trapped and unheard and ended her own life.
