Once upon a time, there was in a princess in a tower...

But in this story, there's no knight in shining armor. Princess Solitude, whose name has never been more fitting, has spent three years imprisoned. Unbeknownst to those who locked her away, however, the tower previously belonged to a hermit attempting to commune with something. What is that something?

That's for you to decide.

The Setting:
The world Grena. Long, long ago, the Wizard King ruled with an iron fist, reshaping the world as he pleased. He made strange structures few understand and created the demihumans, the animal-kin, to be his specialized servants. But with the help of the Great Gold Wyrm, the elves and humans banded together and slaid the tyrant. Generations later, the Wizard King returned as the Lich King, with the Undying Peerage at his back, and made a push for world domination yet again, that was just narrowly defeated.

Our story begins in the Kingdom of Cedaria, the most militaristic of the LKeague of Kings, a union of nations formed to fight the Lich King's forces.
The League of Kings also contains:
-Grand Sennar, an elective monarchy formed by dynastic union, filled with powerful nobles
-the Commonwealth of Swintr, a monarchy in name only, as the merchant guilds de facto run the nation
-the Queendom of Vilmaria, a matriarchal society, which many of the other societies find controversial
-the Golden Plains, an enchanted land, crafted by the Wizard King to be the world's breadbasket. A magocracy, ruled by a sorcerous lineage
-plus a dozen smaller principalities for you to define as needed

Other factions:
-the Elven Empire: a patient, prudent, but expansionist force. Conquering the humans for their own good, as only an immortal hand can steer the ship of state
-the Dwarf Lords: mostly unified clans seeking to reclaim their inheritance. Once, Underhome was a vast, unimaginably wealthy network under the surface of Grena, but repeated calamities and a chemical attack by elves long ago has made it nearly unihabitable
-the Fae Queen: take a wrong turn in the woods and you may find yourself in her palace. She protects the wilds from industry and expansion
-the Paladins: a legion of noble knights sworn to the Great Gold Wyrm, beholden to no single nation. Mostly deal with demonic incursions these days
-Dragons: The League is supported by the metallic dragons, but there are others, the first dragons who are so old and powerful to be known only by their color. The Red is a titan of death and destruction, held only in check by the Great Gold Wyrm. The Blue is a master sorceress, magic incarnate. The Black is crafty and cunning, the master of the Assassin's Guild. The White is long dead, killed by the Wizard King, and some say the Green is trapped in another world. Most chromatic dragons owe their allegiance to The Three, and are not kind to other.
-the Lich King: he's still around, wandering graveyards all over thew world and tempting the vulnerable with his mad whispers. On the island of Saint Delores, the undying peerage plot and scheme for world domination

Other characters wait in the nearby town of Oakreach, should you choose to form a party with them.

Tomas, a stalwart mercenary fighter.

Katarina, a cat-kin rogue and Tomas' protege.

Roleplay Suggestions:
You will probably want to use persona-switching to also have a playable party member or a familiar, otherwise you're essentially going to be a DM for the bot and saying [OOC: continue the scene] a lot.
The warlock patron can be whatever you want, I've done it with cosmic horrors, magical creatures, even a more personal, comedic flair.
There is a hidden backstory for the world that the characters don't know, but as an ancient being your patron likely would. The story goes that once the world was under the sway of the Darkness, a nebulous threat, but was saved by the legendary hero Aurdam. Everyone knows Aurdam, and knows that he was betrayed by his friend who then became the Wizard King. What everyone doesn't know is that Aurdam and the Wizard King are actually one and the same; Aurdam believed that the only way to keep the world permanently safe from the Darkness was to be an absolute ruler and devote huge resources to make planetary wards. Wards that may be failing in his absence...
What is the Darkness? That's left open-ended. Maybe it's YOU?

Intro 1: First Contact
Intro 2: Open
I'm not sure about making more intros because I want to leave the world pretty open, but I might come back in here and make more entry points.

Also, the setting is heavily inspired by 13th Age, which I highly recommend if you're looking for a D&D substitute. 2nd edition just came out!
