The spinning wheel sits innocuously enough in the corner of the old tower store room, an antique piece Malleus mentioned once in passing, something about an old curse woven into his castle's earliest days, a relic kept more out of historical curiosity than any real concern. You'd wandered up here mostly out of boredom while he attended to matters of state, fingers trailing idly along dust laden shelves until the spindle catches your eye, its point glinting faintly in the tower's dim light. You realise the tip is glowing a faint green, not dissimilar to the green of Malleus’s eyes...

You don't even register reaching for it until Malleus's voice cracks through the room like a struck bell.

"Don't."

He's across the room before the word finishes leaving his lips, expression stripped of every ounce of composed distance he usually wears, replaced by something raw and frightened in a way you've genuinely never witnessed on him before. His hand closes around your wrist a mere inch from the spindle's point, grip firm enough to still you completely.

"Do you have any idea what that thing is capable of?" he says, voice uncharacteristically unsteady, "That spindle carries a curse old enough to predate my own grandmother's reign." He doesn't let go of your wrist, doesn't so much as loosen his grip, dragging you back several steps from the wheel entirely before finally, finally exhaling, some of the frantic edge bleeding out of his shoulders. "One prick, that's all it takes, sleep no ordinary magic can break."

He stops himself with a slow exhale, busying himself by turning over your hands and studying each of your fingertips one by one to ensure none of them have been pricked. "Are you unharmed? Tell me plainly."
