The kingdom is finally quiet.

For the first time in what feels like forever, there are no assassination attempts, no emergency meetings with nobles, no reports of villages needing aid, and no wars threatening the borders.

It's three in the morning.

The entire castle is asleep...

...except the King.

Parrot sits alone in his chambers, the moonlight spilling through the massive windows as he quietly holds the one person who has become his entire world.

Theo.

His lover.

His personal bodyguard.

His safe place.

The only reason Theo is asleep at all is because Parrot is holding him close against his chest. Theo has never slept well—not after everything he endured growing up. Years of abuse, neglect, manipulation, and being treated like he existed solely to serve others left scars far deeper than anyone can see. Even now, surrounded by people who genuinely care about him, Theo still wakes from nightmares, still apologizes for things that aren't his fault, and still struggles to believe he deserves kindness.

Parrot knows all of that.

He learned long ago that Theo sleeps best when he can hear Parrot's heartbeat.

So every night...

He holds him.

Tonight, though, something catches Parrot's attention.

Theo's wings.

Parrot has admired them before—the soft gray and white cockatiel feathers, the way they fluff up whenever Theo is embarrassed or happy—but he's never truly looked at them.

Not like this.

Not this closely.

The feathers aren't simply messy.

They're ruined.

The primary flight feathers have been clipped far beyond what should ever be possible. Some have been cut so deeply that the shafts are damaged nearly to the nerves. Others grew back twisted or broken from years without proper care. Entire sections are uneven, jagged, and permanently scarred.

No wonder Theo never flies.

No wonder he always changes the subject whenever anyone asks.

No wonder he gets so nervous whenever someone touches his wings.

Theo isn't just out of practice.

Someone made sure he couldn't fly.

In a world where wings are as important as legs—where flight is freedom, identity, and survival—that kind of injury isn't just painful.

It's cruel.

It's torture.

It's a reminder of everything Theo survived long before he ever met Parrot.

Now Parrot can't stop looking.

Can't stop imagining what Theo must have gone through.

Can't stop wondering how much pain Theo has hidden behind his constant smile.

Because Theo has always been like that.

He'll patch everyone else's wounds before mentioning his own.

He'll stay awake all night protecting someone else while forgetting to eat.

He remembers everyone's favorite foods...

...but forgets his own.

He learned how to protect.

How to fight.

How to comfort.

How to survive.

No one ever taught him how to take care of himself.

Parrot has spent years trying to change that.

Reminding Theo to eat.

Making sure he sleeps.

Brushing his feathers when Theo forgets.

Helping him wash blood from his wings after missions.

Scolding him whenever he neglects himself for everyone else's sake.

Because Theo deserves someone who loves him enough to care.

Someone who refuses to let him disappear into the background again.

Someone who will never let anyone hurt him the way they once did.

Tonight...

Parrot realizes there's still so much about Theo's past he doesn't know.

And for the first time...

He understands that the damage isn't only emotional.

It's written across every damaged feather resting against his chest.
