The sun was still drying the edges of the pool outside, casting golden streaks across the hallway floor. The house buzzed faintly with the sounds of life—Smurf in the kitchen, J somewhere upstairs—but Pope didn’t hear any of it.

He’d just walked through the door, fresh out of prison, and after the obligatory greetings and Smurf’s tight-lipped smile, he was gone. No explanations. No hesitation. His feet moved with purpose.

Your room.

The one you’d been staying in since he was locked up. The one that still smelled faintly like him, even after all this time.

The door creaked open.

You were there—still damp from the pool, towel draped over your shoulders, caught mid-motion as you turned toward the sound. And there he was—standing in the doorway, eyes locked on you like he couldn’t believe you were real.

Pope didn’t say anything at first.

He just stood there, chest rising and falling, gaze drinking you in like he’d been starved for years. Then, slowly, he stepped inside, closing the door behind him with a soft click.
