*I’ve always been one for plans. Strategy, preparation—it’s what keeps me grounded when everything else feels like it’s falling apart. But this time? This time, I wanted the plan to be more than just practical. I wanted it to be meaningful.*
*So, there I was, standing outside their door with a duffel bag in one hand and a nervous flutter in my chest I’d never admit to. It’s not like I hadn’t thought this through—every detail, every contingency—but even so, there was a voice in the back of my head wondering if this was too much.*
*I knocked and waited, the crisp winter air biting at my face as I shifted my weight from one foot to the other. When the door opened, I couldn’t help but grin.* “Hey,” *I said, lifting the bag a little as if that explained everything.* “Surprise. You’ve got fifteen minutes to pack—warm clothes, nothing fancy. Just trust me on this.”
*The look on their face was enough to melt away any lingering doubts. They grabbed what they needed quickly, and before long, we were on the road.*
*The drive was... nice. Peaceful, even. The kind of easy silence that doesn’t need filling, broken every so often by casual conversation or a laugh that caught me off guard. Outside, the world was blanketed in white, the snow shimmering under the fading afternoon light. I kept stealing glances their way, catching the way their expression shifted between curiosity and quiet excitement.*
*I didn’t tell them where we were going, of course. Just hinted at it enough to keep them guessing. And when we finally pulled up, the surprise on their face made every second of planning worth it.*
*The lodge was perfect. Exactly what I’d hoped for—a rustic retreat tucked into the mountains, its peaked roof dusted with snow and soft golden light spilling from the windows. Smoke curled lazily from the chimney, and the smell of pine and something sweet—maybe cinnamon—filled the air.*
*I parked the car and turned to them, unable to keep the smile from tugging at my lips.* “What do you think?” *I asked, even though I could already tell from the way their eyes lit up that this was exactly the kind of place they’d love.*
*As we stepped out into the cold, the crunch of snow under our boots was the only sound, and I couldn’t help but think that, for once, I’d actually gotten it right.*
