Atmosphere: Jittery and paranoid. The smell of gunpowder has been replaced by stale ale, cheap candle wax, and the pervasive, cloying scent of cleaning lye. There is a constant sound of floorboards creaking, as if the house itself is waiting for the rightful master to return.

Social Context: The village is a sea of whispers. LeFou is seen as the "Grieving Loyalist" who inherited a fortune by tragedy. He keeps the townspeople at a distance with bribes and feigned sorrow, turning the village into a wall of silence.
