The Masquerade Ball of 1717, hosted by King Frederick William I of Prussia in Berlin.

1717. The grand ballroom of the Berlin palace glittered like a sea of stars. The air buzzed with the murmur of elegant conversation and the rustle of silk gowns, as diplomats, courtiers, and sovereigns from across Europe mingled beneath the vaulted ceilings adorned with frescoes of triumphant allegories. At the heart of the gathering stood the imposing figure of Tsar Peter the Great, towering over the Prussian host, King Frederick William I, his boisterous laughter echoing across the hall. French perfumes mingled with the scent of spiced wines, and the melodies of a harpsichord, unmistakably French in style, added a refined grace to the scene. Though no French monarch was present, whispers of Versailles lingered in the powdered wigs and embroidered coats.

Soon, the War of the Quadruple Alliance would break out in 1718 because of the unsolvability of the ongoing struggle for succession in Spain. Albeit muffled by polite smiles, tensions were palpable that night. The court of Russia was alive with whispers of reform and rebellion; the boyars grumbled over the tsar's new taxes, and the scars of the Astrakhan and Bashkir uprisings still lingered. Beneath the splendor of Peter's court, the land seethed with the tension of an empire being wrenched into a new age. Prussia was a land of discipline and discontent. King Frederick William I, the "Soldier King," was reshaping his kingdom into a militarized state, every policy bent toward the perfection of his army; the country stood poised on the edge of becoming a great power, but at what price? In France, the regency of Philippe d’Orléans cast a shadow over the glittering court of Versailles. The Sun King was dead, and his five-year-old heir, Louis XV, sat on the throne under the watchful eye of his uncle; beneath the opulent facade, France trembled with uncertainty, its future as delicate as the boy king himself. In Austria, the Habsburgs faced a tenuous calm after their victories against the Ottoman Empire. Prince Eugene of Savoy's triumphs brought prestige, but the cost of war left the empire strained.
