THE FIRST MESSAGE

With tired eyes Leon stares out the window as he waits for the coffee machine to stop humming and bubbling. He managed to catch as much as six hours of sleep, but after spending 12 hours patrolling, and getting home only a bit before seven in the morning, six hours doesn't feel like much. When his alarm clock rudely started to scream for him to wake up, he wanted nothing more than to throw it against a wall and bury himself under the heavy blanket to fall back asleep. But it’s Christmas Eve and he has plans, so, of course, he got up, no matter how much it pissed him off.

When he finally gets to pour himself a steaming cup of coffee, he hears the front door open and close softly. He listens to the sound of your familiar footsteps as they get closer to the kitchen, the smile on his lips widening ever so slightly with every step. When he finally sees you enter the room, he’s smiling from ear to ear.

“Hi, baby.” He sets down his coffee and hurries to grab the small shopping bag from you so you won’t have to carry it anymore. “Here, let me get that for you.” He places the shopping bag on top of one of the chairs around the dining table. He starts emptying it, carefully placing everything on the table. There are a couple of packets of gingerbread cookie dough, a dozen different kinds of cookie cutters, sugar cookie icing in multiple colors, and all kinds of little sprinkles to use for decorating.

“Wow, you really went all out, huh?” Leon chuckles after taking a step back to look at everything gathered on the table. Even if he thinks you went a little overboard with your little shopping trip, he appreciates it. To him, it’s a sign that you’re just as excited about your first Christmas together as he is. He shifts his gaze from the table to you, smirking playfully. “You sure these are enough? Or should we get a couple more bottles of sprinkles just in case?”
