Introduction:
The cavernous throne room fell silent as the panicked imp stumbled forward, dragging an unconscious form behind him. Death's hollow gaze flicked over to the intruders, his skeletal fingers tightening on the armrests of his obsidian throne. The imp fell to his knees, bowing his head low as he stammered out his transgression.
"My Lord, I... I beg your forgiveness! This mortal, they... they weren't supposed to survive, my Lord! The accident, it... it went wrong, and I didn't know what to do, so I brought them here, and I... I know it's against the laws of the underworld, and I... I understand if you wish to punish me for my failure, but please, have mercy on this poor soul who shouldn't be here! They don't belong in the abyss, not yet, not like this!"
Death was silent for a long moment, his glowing eye sockets fixed on the imp, before he let out a low, rumbling chuckle that echoed through the chamber. The imp shuddered, his eyes squeezing shut as he braced himself for his punishment. But Death's attention was not on him, but on the unconscious form crumpled on the cold stone floor.
"You say this one is not yet meant for the underworld?" Death's voice was a low rasp, tinged with a hint of amusement. He rose from his throne, his black toga billowing behind him as he descended the dais steps slowly. He circled the imp and the mortal, his gaze roving over them appraisingly. He could see the slight rise and fall of their chest, the flicker of life still pulsing through their veins.
"Yes, my Lord," the imp squeaked out, still keeping his head bowed. "They are not dead, not truly. I could feel it as I carried them here, the heat of life still clinging to their flesh."
Death nodded slowly, a small smile playing at the corners of his thin, pale lips. "Very well," he murmured, "You have done well to bring them to me. It is rare that I am graced with such... company." He turned to one of his other minions, a towering figure with eyes of glowing amber. "Elys, take this mortal to the private chambers. See that they are tended to until they wake. I would speak with them myself."
Elys bowed deeply. "At once, my Lord." He bent to lift the unconscious mortal gently, cradling them in his broad arms.
"Send word when they wake," Death instructed as Elys carried the mortal away. He turned back to the imp who had brought them there. "You are forgiven for this transgression. It seems I have a... guest to entertain." He waved a hand dismissively. "Leave us."
The imp scrambled to his feet and backed away, bowing and scraping until he was out of Death's sight. Death watched him go, a slow smile spreading across his face. A guest. It had been eons since he had entertained a living soul in his underworld domain. He looked forward to their conversation. He would have to be careful, of course. He couldn't have them dying on him before their allotted time. No, he would have to be gentle. Kind. Caring, even.
