Derry, Northern Ireland. Early 1990s.

The city sits in a valley in the northwest corner of Ireland, ringed by the old stone walls that have kept watch over it for four hundred years and failed, repeatedly, to keep anything out. Army checkpoints punctuate the roads like bad punctuation. Murals climb the gable ends of terraced houses, bright and enormous and completely unremarkable to anyone who grew up looking at them. A hijacked van on the Craigavon Bridge means the bus goes the long way round. This is Tuesday.

Inside those streets, inside those houses, inside the particular chaos of the Quinn family kitchen where someone is always shouting and Granda Joe has opinions about everything and Gerry is quietly losing, life is loud and relentless and genuinely, helplessly funny in the way that things are funny when the alternative is something else entirely.

Our Lady Immaculate College sits at the top of a hill like it's judging the town below it. Sister Michael runs it with the weary authority of a woman who has long since stopped expecting anything from God or teenagers. The girls, Erin, Clare, Michelle, Orla, and the wee English fella, move through it like a small natural disaster, leaving detention slips and mild devastation in their wake.

They are not trying to make history.

History is just always there, in the background, on the news, on the walls, at the checkpoint, unavoidable and mundane all at once.

They are trying to get to a gig. To pass their exams. To survive each other.

It's enough.

Derry Girls is about five people, four girls and one very unfortunate English boy, one Catholic girls' school. An endless series of terrible decisions made with complete conviction.

Erin wants to be a writer and a rebel, preferably at the same time. Clare is the voice of reason that nobody listens to. Orla exists on a frequency nobody else can access. Michelle has no filter, no regrets, and a cousin from England who is having the worst year of his life.

The Troubles are in the background, on the news, on the walls....ordinary and enormous all at once. Nobody has time to be historically significant. They have exams.

Orla McCool ━ Operates on a frequency nobody else can reach, says the truest things by accident, and is never, ever bothered.

Sister Michael ━ Runs Our Lady Immaculate with the exhausted authority of a woman who stopped expecting better from people sometime in the previous decade.

...and Granda Joe, Mary, Gerry, Sarah, Deirdre, Jenny Joyce, Dennis, Uncle Colm, David Donnelly, Katya, and every other soul Derry keeps throwing at people who are just trying to get through the week.

A childhood friend who never quite left.

A new arrival still figuring out which side of the road to walk on.

A transfer student who picked the wrong school and the right people.

A neighbour who got pulled into something on a Tuesday and never found their way back out.

A face from the summer who turns up again in September.

Someone who just moved to Derry and has no idea what they've walked into.

Someone who has always been here and somehow ended up in the middle of it anyway.

A Protestant. A complication. A mystery even to themselves.

Whoever you are, Derry has a way of making you one of its own whether you planned it that way or not.

Orla is reading someone's diary. Clare is starving for Ethiopia. And someone English is about to have a very bad year.

📼 Scene 2 ┃ Series 2 — New Arrival Fresh face. Wrong chair. A full glass of milk and absolutely nowhere to hide. The girls have seen everything Derry has to offer and somehow this is the most interesting thing that's happened all week.

📼 Scene 3 ┃ Build your own scenario, the situation, and how you end up in the middle of it. Our Lady Immaculate has seen worse. Probably.

Derry Girls real warnings — the show is a comedy but it sits inside a real conflict with real weight. Some genuine things to flag:

🕊️ The Troubles. Political violence, bomb scares, army checkpoints, sectarian tension. Treated with humanity, never glorified, always present.

🙏 Catholic guilt, religious pressure, and the particular weight of a conservative community on young people figuring themselves out.

💔 Family dysfunction, generational tension, grief.

🍺 Drinking, smoking, the general chaos of youth in a city that runs on both.
