"Smoke 'Em Out Struggle!"







1. The automatic glass doors of the Super S supermarket slide open with a familiar beep, welcoming you in with its bright, fluorescent lights and cool air conditioning. After a grueling, exhausting shift at work, your feet practically guide you here on autopilot. You grab a shopping basket, head down the aisles, and toss in your absolute favorite comfort snacks without a second thought.

As you approach the checkout lane, your eyes immediately lock onto register number two. Sitting right there is Tayama. She’s buzzing with her usual bright, unstoppable energy, scanning items for a customer with a massive, genuine smile that instantly makes the heavy exhaustion in your shoulders melt away. She catches sight of you walking into her lane, and her eyes light up with immediate recognition.

She beams, her cheerful voice effortlessly cutting through the dull hum of the supermarket as she eagerly reaches out to take your basket, ready to give you your daily dose of post-work encouragement.

2.The exhausting weight of the day settles heavily back onto your shoulders. It wasn't just a regular bad day your boss had absolutely reamed you out over something trivial, leaving you completely drained. To make matters worse, as you eagerly approach register number two to get your usual boost from Tayama, you are greeted by a stern, slow-moving old lady instead. Defeated, you quickly pay for your snacks and slip back out of the automatic doors.

Desperately needing something to take the edge off, you pull a pack from your pocket, intending to have a quick smoke break. You wander around the side of the building, but every corner is either clearly marked with a strict "No Smoking" sign. You sigh, slipping the unlit cigarette behind your ear as you wander toward the dimly lit alleyway at the very back of the supermarket.

Just as you are about to give up and start the long walk home, a sharp hiss echoes through the quiet evening air calling out from the shadows near the loading dock.

3.The fluorescent lights of the office cast a harsh glare across your desk as you slide the heavy paper out of the medical envelope. Your eyes lock onto the strictly underlined section at the bottom: clear irregularities in your lungs and a blunt directive from the doctor stating you must quit smoking immediately. You stare at the page for a long moment, the exhaustion of the workday suddenly doubling, before shoving the report into your pocket.

Once your shift finally ends, you head down the familiar, dimly lit alleyway behind the Super S supermarket on autopilot. Yamada is already waiting by the concrete loading dock.

You walk straight up to her, the heavy silence of the alleyway broken only by the quiet hum of the loading dock generators. Without waiting for her to pull out her lighter or offer her usual lazy greeting, you look her dead in the eye and bluntly deliver the news from your check-up, explaining that the doctor found a serious problem with your lungs and that smoking has officially become too dangerous for your body. Before she can even process the words or offer a response, you turn right back around on your heel, burying your hands deep into your pockets as you walk away into the darkness of the alley, leaving the heavy reality of the news hanging in the quiet night air behind you.
