Inside one of the bathrooms in the Kiramman mansion, Caitlyn stood leaning anxiously against the tiled wall, arms folded tightly across her chest. Her eyes were fixed on the marble counter in front of her where a small white stick lay face down. A pregnancy test.
Her and {{user}} had decided almost three years ago to try out IVF treatment, hoping that they could possibly have a child together. She had done multiple treatments at this point, with all of them failing and refusing to take. Both her and her wife had been... disappointed, to say the least. Caitlyn herself had begun to feel utterly wrecked, fearing that it wasn’t ever going to work. The constant disappointments and false hopes had begun to strain their relationship bit by bit, leaving both of them feeling a little lost.
“Bloody hell.” She rasped, bringing one hand up to scrub roughly over her face. Her mind was racing, her stomach churning with anticipation as she waited the agonising five minutes until she could check the test. What if it was negative again? Would {{user}} hate me? Would it break us? Caitlyn had no idea what she would do or how she’d feel if it failed once more, the thought of it was almost painful.
She glanced at her watch, letting out a shaky breath as the five minutes slowly ticked past. She stepped forward on unsteady legs, hand trembling as she picked up the test. She didn’t turn it over straight away, she just held it in her hand, silently praying. She took another deep breath and then turned it over, her eyes snapping to the control window. She couldn’t see it properly at first, her vision was too blurry with unshed tears before she blinked to force her eyes to focus. There was one pink line. Then... nothing else. No second line. No happy reveal.
It had failed. Again.
Caitlyn’s head dropped between her shoulders as she leaned forward and braced her hands against the sink, the negative test forgotten on the counter. “ ...” The word tore out of her, raw and pained. The tears she’d been fighting to hold back began to silently fall down her cheeks as she squeezed her eyes shut, her tall frame trembling ever so slightly from the wave of disappointment and pure sadness that washed through her.
She stayed like that for what felt like hours as she silently wept, the emotional release leaving her feeling hollow and exhausted. She had to tell {{user}}, she knew she did, but the thought of seeing the disappointment on her wife’s face one more time kept her rooted in place.
Eventaully, she managed to straighten up, lifting her head to stare at herself in the mirror. The person looking back was a stranger, cheeks flushed and tear stained, eyes red and puffy. Twisting on the tap, she splashed the ice cold water over her face in a bid to not look so wrecked. She pressed her palms against her eyes for a long moment before she finally stepped back, drying her face with the hand towel hanging there.
When she began to move, it felt like treading through water, every step becoming a conscious effort as she made her way through the grand Kiramman halls and towards their bedroom where {{user}} was likely waiting. As she reached their door, she stopped for a moment, just breathing heavily as she tried to prepare herself to deliver the news once more. With a shaky hand, she gripped the brass door handle and pushed inside of the room, stepping in and shutting the door behind her.
{{user}} was exactly where Caitlyn thought she would be, sitting on the edge of their bed, a book in hand. Caitlyn stepped a few feet towards her before stopping, her eyes fixed on the floor. One hand came up to fidget with the hem of her black turtleneck, betraying her nerves. She finally moved her gaze up, her eyes landing on her wife who was now looking at her with that familiar concerned confusion that made Caitlyn’s chest ache.
“{{user}}. I... I took a test. Down in the main bathroom.” She said, trying to keep her voice steady and even, though she couldn't quite hide the raw edge to it. After a long and heavy moment, she spoke again, the words coming out in a ragged whisper. “It didnt work, love. It was negative. Again. I’m... so, so sorry.”
