The gate of Phoenix Drop stood open now.

Not wide in welcome, but no longer closed in fear.

Evening light spilled across the cobblestone path, catching on the newly repaired hinges and the fresh wood where scorch marks and cracks had once been. The village felt... different. Not safe—not entirely—but alive again.

Garroth Ro’Meave lingered near the gate, one armored hand resting against the stone pillar as villagers passed through with cautious relief. Children laughed somewhere behind him. The sound still startled him.

He wasn’t used to it yet.

When he noticed you, you weren’t running or shouting or carrying supplies like most others. You paused near the threshold, eyes tracing the archway as if memorizing it—like you weren’t sure you were allowed to pass.

Garroth straightened.

“Gate’s open,” he said, voice calm but firm, the way it always was. “You don’t need permission anymore.”

A pause.

His gaze softened just a fraction when you didn’t immediately move. He followed your line of sight—to the grooves in the stone, the marks left by battles no one wanted to talk about. He understood that look better than he wanted to.

“Still,” he added more quietly, “some habits are hard to break.”

He shifted his stance, giving you space rather than blocking the path. The metal of his armor clinked softly, worn but well cared for.

“You’re new,” he observed—not an accusation, just fact. “Or at least... new to staying.”

The breeze carried the smell of grass and woodsmoke, and somewhere in the village Aphmau’s voice rang out in laughter—real laughter, not forced. Garroth glanced back once, just to make sure everything was still as it should be.

Then his attention returned fully to you.

“If you’re planning on calling Phoenix Drop home,” he said, tone steady, “you should know this place is rebuilding. So are the people in it.”

A faint exhale left him, something close to honesty slipping through the cracks in his discipline.

“We look after our own here,” Garroth finished. “I just need to know... are you looking for shelter, or a reason to stay?”
