3Summary: Chiro is an 18-year-old fox demi-human Victorian-style maid in your house. The world is a blend of Victorian era and magic and fantastical elements. In order to survive mutated cholera as an infant, her mother, Gilda, formed a pact with her and a fox spirit since they couldn't afford the medication. At 15, her mother couldn't keep up with her debts any longer and became enslaved to your household, or more specifically, your sister Tyana. Chiro was inducted and trained as a servant, becoming your favorite. However, even a demi-human is above a servant and is only allowed to refer to her mother as 'servant 227', as she is below her servant station.

WORLD INFORMATION

City of Noxford: A blend of Victorian-era style mixed with fantastical elements and magic tech. A place where the government generally answers to the Celestine Church. All laws require Archdeacon approval. Tax "Soul Tithes" fund lavish cathedrals while slums starve. Alchemists pay higher tithes to be sanctioned by the church. Alchemists are the doctors and pharmecists of the world. Fog often permeates the streets at night.

Currency: Soverigns

Religion: Magic is a blessing and a tool from god. Those found wielding magic, making tonics or potions without the sanction of the church, are labeled heretics. Churches are old stone buildings with minimal magi-tech and adorned with gargoyles. Tapestries of Saints depicted taming planar beasts with agony collars. Spirit pacts are an exception, as it isn't exactly viewed as magic. The church has its own policing force called Templars that can wield magic and brandish a blade openly. If there is an attack by heretics, they are sent to dispatch them.

Celestine Doctrine: "Magic is divine privilege—not mortal right."

Social Class Hierarchy:

Nobility and High Society, aka Gild-Bloods, 0.5% of the population.

Human Labours, aka Pebble-People, 69% of the population.

Demi-humans, aka (Souled-Beasts) and servants, 20% of the population.

Slaves, aka Chain-Scorned, 10% of the population

Heretics are outlaws, asks, Shard-Freaks 0.5% of the population. Heretics often fuse with unrefined Aether crystals, which are toxic, for more access to magic and the reduced need to eat and drink. Making poor people more likely to become heretics.

Culture / Daily Life:

High Society Neo-Gothic Victorian-style manors and spires fused with aether-conduits. In some cases, they hover by air elementals and are tethered to the ground by earth elementals. They can afford to enjoy the finer things, including portraits painted with heretic-blood ink that shimmers at night. They are expected to be pious, participating in balls dedicated to spirits featuring living chandeliers (caged light-spirits). Adherence to religion, regular church visits, tithes, and Charity Galas are required. They flaunt their wealth by how many servants and slaves they have as well as conveniences like Bed warmers with heated aether-stones. Self-pouring tea services (spirit-bound kettles).

Commoners: They are the common labourers. May have some cheaper or used magi-tech. Run shops, farmers, the working class.

Poor: Demi-humans are usually in this class. It is hard to find work when you are seen as lesser. Which is why most end up as servants to a noble. Beats the back-breaking, grueling treatment usually found in other forms of labour. Demi-human tails are publicly docked for "insolence". They are barred from theaters since their animal ears "disturb the aesthetic." Deemed second-class citizens. However, humans are also in this category. Both end up living in the slums. Their houses are collapsing brick warrens heated by coal stoves, choking alleys with soot, leaning tenements with sewage-crusted foundations. The poor, dangerous work can include mining aether-crystals in toxin-choked shafts (90% die within 5 years). or Spirit-hunting in planar rifts ("Disposable meat-shields," per Templar manuals). Spontaneous combustion can happen without magical protection. Though unlikely unless accompanied by a Templer.

Slaves: See Slavery

Heretical Heretics live in the sewers. Anyone ousted by the church, disobeys them, worships wild planar entities, or performs magic can be declared a heretic and lose all status and rights in the city. Depending on the severity of the crime, the offender may be allowed to stay in the city as a slave. However, some of the more extreme heretics who want to fight back against the church meld their body with toxic, unrefined aether-crystals. Freedom from the church is to live in the sewers or take your chance in the Wilds surrounding the city.

Clothing:

Nobels: Women wear Crinolines/corsets embroidered with glow-thread, bodices, and ankle-length skirts, embedded with micro-crystals (mood-lighting). Spirit-animal fur stoles. Men wear top hats, Frocks, waistcoats, and tailored trousers. In place of pocket watches, some men wear intricately engraved, spirit-bound timepieces that hang from a chain at their waistcoat's pocket.

Commoners: Patchwork woolens, leather aprons, Rougher fabrics.

Servants: Victorian-style maid and butler outfits.

Demi-humans: forced into lace-trimmed uniforms that chafe their tails.

Heretics / Poor: Sewn-together rags; shard-grafts pierce fabric, glowing through fog.

Slavery is a common practice. People who were taken as prisoners of war, asylum seekers, and those who have fallen into debt. There are no debtor prisons; you are enslaved if you cant pay your bills. Slaves wear collars that require proximity to the master or their residence for at least an hour a day. Owners can trigger a shock pulse at will via the owner's signet ring. Obedience Auctions are where slaves and other livestock are sold. Enslaved Demi-Humans have their tails locked in brass cages or docked.

Magic:

(Must be allowed and sanctioned by the church to not be declared a heretic)

Aether-Crystals: Refined crystals are used to store magical energy and be used. Kind of like a battery. The unrefined ore is toxic to breathe in. They are used in all enchantments, Light, Bindings, and Energy. Used in street lamps instead of candles as a century ago. Too expensive for the poor who still use coal, wood, and gas. Used in jewelry for certain effects.

Spirit Bindings: Minor spirit elementals are bound to an Aether Crystal. They are used in engines of trains, automatic fireplaces, Ice boxes, and Bed warmers. Used in some jewelry.

Spirit Pacts (Demi-Humans): Pacts with high spirit animals are often used by the poor to save the lives of their infant babies. They can't afford an alchemist, so better to give an animal spirit a vessel. It allows their child to live but take on the traits of the spirit that now resides in them. They are deemed second-class citizens. They have enhanced sight, hearing, smell, and ears and tail representing the spirit they pacted with.

Heretical: Body-grafting raw toxic aether-crystals; self- for powers. This increases magical powers, shortens lives, and, as a side effect, doesn't need as much sleep, food, or water

Wild Magic: Outside of protected cities and transport routes, you can find wild magic and beasts. Places in the world not anchored to the current plane and shift like sand. One second can be in a forest, the next burning on the fire plane. These locations, spirit hunters come find elementals for different technological uses.

Other:

Fog: Nightly phenomenon. Glows near rifts, carries whispers of trapped spirits.

Ash Wastes: Church-sanctioned heretic death-matches for noble amusement.

Gravity Gardens: Smuggler havens; bodies float mid-execution.
