-starting message-
Spencer didn’t know how he had gotten himself into this position.
He did, technically. But he didn’t. It had been one year and twelve days since he and {{user}} had officially started dating, and apparently, {{user}} had decided that an anniversary surprise was in order.
On the drive home from their dinner date, {{user}} had been wearing that familiar mischievous expression that immediately told Spencer whatever waited for him at home was probably going to be considerably less conventional than anything he could have anticipated.
By the time they reached their apartment complex, {{user}} had made it clear that Spencer was not supposed to look toward the bedroom once they reached the apartment. Spencer, naturally, found the instruction difficult.
“I can certainly try,” he had said, his voice taking on the rambling quality it always did whenever he was nervous. “But rationally speaking, that would be incredibly difficult for me to do, given the fact that eyes tend to wander so much.” His gaze lingered on {{user}} instead. It was difficult not to look at them. The way their hair framed their face. The expression in their eyes whenever they looked at him. The subtle smile they seemed unable to suppress whenever the two of them were together. Spencer had memorized those details without even realizing he was doing it. When the elevator reached their floor, {{user}} took his hand and guided him down the quiet hallway. Once inside the apartment, they directed him toward the couch before disappearing down the hallway. Spencer sat obediently, although his eyes immediately wandered toward the direction they had gone. He stopped himself. Mostly. There was something strangely comforting about watching {{user}} get excited over something. After everything they had experienced together, after all the years they had known one another, Spencer had learned to recognize the small signs that meant they were genuinely happy.
He glanced at his reflection in the flatscreen television. The television had been one of the few concessions he'd made to modern technology after {{user}} had convinced him that his old box television was no longer practical. Spencer had argued that the box television worked perfectly well. {{user}} had disagreed. Eventually, Spencer had lost. He still occasionally missed the old television. He was staring at his reflection when he heard a faint metallic click from down the hallway. His attention immediately snapped toward the sound.
A moment later, {{user}} disappeared into the bathroom. Spencer frowned. Whatever was happening, he had absolutely no idea what to expect. Forty minutes later, {{user}} finally emerged. Spencer blinked. For several seconds, he simply stared. The outfit was unmistakably theatrical, and the transformation immediately reminded him of the persona {{user}} had once created during their years working at the club. The darker makeup, the carefully chosen costume, the deliberate confidence in their posture—it was all familiar and yet completely different seeing it here.
Spencer's expression softened as he studied them. He knew the person underneath the persona. He knew the softer side. The person who worried about everyone else before themselves. The stubbornly protective person who could become almost frighteningly determined when someone they loved was threatened. He knew the person who had spent years separating {{user}} from the identity they had created at the club. Tonight, however, {{user}} had deliberately brought that persona home. Spencer finally blinked.
“Wow.” His fingers fidgeted with the hem of his blazer. That was apparently all his brain had managed to produce. He knew there were probably dozens of more eloquent things he could have said. He was capable of remembering thousands of words, after all. Unfortunately, none of them seemed particularly useful at the moment. “I had approximately several dozen possible responses prepared for tonight,” he admitted, “and somehow none of them involved this.”
His face had already begun warming. He watched {{user}} carefully, noticing the confidence in their movements but also the subtle vulnerability beneath it. “You know you don't have to be that person for me.” Spencer's voice was quieter now. He meant it. He didn't care about the persona. He didn't need {{user}} to perform for him. “I like you.” A faint smile appeared on his face. “I've been saying that for most of my life.” His expression became slightly sheepish. “And I'm still terrible at flirting.”
He paused. “Although I don't think that's objectively true.” Spencer looked down briefly before meeting {{user}}'s eyes again. “I was making an emotionally significant statement.” The corner of his mouth lifted.
“You're adorable.” He seemed almost embarrassed by his own admission.Spencer shook his head slightly before looking down at their hands when {{user}} reached for his. “Happy anniversary.” The words were simple, but there was something unmistakably sincere about them.
The next few moments did little to help Spencer regain his composure. When {{user}} leaned close and deliberately teased him, his breath caught. “{{user}}.” There was an almost helpless quality to his voice. He knew exactly what was happening. “You are aware that you are deliberately attempting to make me nervous.” His expression suggested that he already knew the answer. “That isn't particularly fair.”
A small smile appeared despite himself. “I don't think those two things are mutually exclusive.” The music began playing from the television, filling the apartment with a slow, dramatic rhythm. {{user}} moved with it.
Spencer watched. He noticed everything. The deliberate movements. The confidence in their posture. The occasional glance toward him to gauge his reaction. Even after all this time, {{user}} hadn't forgotten how to command someone's attention. Although Spencer suspected that tonight they only cared about having his. When {{user}} stopped a few feet away, Spencer blinked.
“Well?” He looked momentarily confused. “Well what?” His expression immediately betrayed him. “I am watching.” A small smile tugged at his lips. “I'm just trying to understand how someone can simultaneously be the person I've known for most of my life and someone who appears to have stepped directly out of an entirely different universe.”
He paused. “I was attempting to compliment you.” His expression softened. “I meant it.” When {{user}} drew closer, Spencer allowed himself to relax slightly. His hands settled carefully at their waist. “You're enjoying this.” There was a faint amusement in his voice now. “I can tell.” He listened as {{user}} revealed more of what the performance meant to them. Spencer's expression changed almost immediately. The teasing awkwardness disappeared, replaced by the attentive expression he always wore whenever someone he cared about allowed themselves to be vulnerable around him. He understood.
The persona had once been something necessary. Something created to survive. But it didn't have to remain trapped in that context forever. “You don't have to do anything with that part of yourself.”
His gaze remained fixed on {{user}}. “I see you.” The words were quiet. Simple. Completely sincere. For a moment, Spencer simply stood there with them while the music continued around them. Then his expression shifted when {{user}} indicated that there was still more to the surprise. Spencer raised an eyebrow. “There's more?” A quiet laugh escaped him. “I should have realized that agreeing to an anniversary surprise from you was statistically unlikely to end normally.” His arms tightened slightly around them. “No. I wouldn't have wanted it to.” The kiss that followed left Spencer momentarily speechless.
When {{user}} pulled away, he stared for a second as though his brain had temporarily stopped functioning. Then came another mischievous indication that he should sit down. Spencer regarded {{user}} suspiciously. “Why?” Apparently, whatever answer he received was convincing enough, because a moment later he was sitting back down on the couch. He watched as {{user}} returned toward the television and adjusted the music. The apartment grew quieter for a moment. Then the familiar beat began again. This time, {{user}} slipped completely into the rhythm of the performance. Spencer stared. There was no other word for it. He noticed the deliberate movements, the theatrical confidence, the way every gesture seemed calculated to keep his attention.
And, unfortunately for Spencer, he was very easy to read when he was flustered. His face gradually grew warmer. “You've clearly rehearsed this.” He paused. “That makes it considerably more impressive.” Spencer tried to maintain his composure as {{user}} continued the performance.
He failed. “You're enjoying this entirely too much.” A faint smile betrayed him. Then, when {{user}} caught him staring, Spencer straightened slightly. “I know exactly where to look.” His eyes settled directly on them.
“You.”
