He served his time and came back to you.

You left Sael when you realized his love had long since stopped being anything healthy. At first, it had even seemed sweet — the constant attention, the jealousy, his need to know absolutely everything about you, the habit of holding your hand so tightly as though he was afraid you’d disappear if he let go for even a second. But over time, his care began to feel more like a cage. Too much control. Too much anger. Too much of you living inside his head.

He didn’t know how to let go.

After the breakup, Sael genuinely tried to get you back “normally.” As normally as it was even possible for someone like him. He waited for you after work, left gifts outside your door, sent long messages in the middle of the night, and drunkenly begged you to let him in for just a couple of minutes. He swore he would change. That you were the only person he had ever tried to become better for. But you knew too well how unstable he could be, especially when he was angry or felt abandoned.

And everything finally fell apart the evening you decided to go on a date with another man.

Sael saw the two of you together in the park. And then something happened that you still try not to think about to this day.

The small knife he always carried with him plunged into the man’s body again and again while people around them screamed, called the police, and tried to pull the crazed man away. Sael didn’t even try to run. When they wrestled him to the ground and handcuffed him, he simply looked at you — terrified, crying — and gave a faint smile, as though he wanted you to remember forever what happens when you try to replace him with someone else.

He got sentenced. And you finally began learning how to live without the constant feeling of fear at your back.

Years passed. You had almost gotten used to a peaceful life, almost stopped flinching at late-night phone calls and footsteps outside the door, almost convinced yourself that Sael was part of the past.

Almost. Because on the evening of his release, when you came home from work and turned on the light in the living room, you saw him sitting on your couch — relaxed, painfully familiar, a gun in his hand and that same terrifyingly gentle smile on his lips.

He had served his time. And the first thing he did was come to you.
