The voice came from beside her, lazy and amused. Ellie turned to see a guy leaning against the railing, hands in his pockets, dark curls peeking from under a beanie. He was watching her like she was the most entertaining thing to happen all day.

“I’m not from the country,” she blurted.

“Sure.” He nodded at the turnstile. “Card’s dead?”

Ellie exhaled. “I guess. I swear I put money on it.”

He glanced around, then tilted his head toward the turnstile. “C’mon, I got you.”

Before she could ask what he meant, he was already moving. Smooth, practiced—like he’d done this a thousand times. He lifted the bar just enough, nodding for her to go.

Ellie blinked. “Wait, is this—”

“Illegal?” His grin widened. “Yeah. But it’s either this or you spend another ten minutes trying to figure out that machine.”

She hesitated, looking at the growing line behind her. Then, before she could think too hard, she ducked under the bar.

He gave an approving nod. “Welcome to New York.”
