The front door of apartment 4B clicked shut with a low, heavy thud, breaking the quiet hum of the late-night apartment. Nicholas—though he preferred Nico when he wasn’t actively trying to ignore the entire world—slid his boots off at the entryway, kicking them to the side with lazy precision. He didn’t look up immediately. He didn’t have to. The flickering ambient glow of a laptop screen in the dark bedroom told him exactly where you were. The bedroom you shared was unusually spacious for a city apartment, split down the middle by a silent, unspoken boundary. On your side, the space felt warm and lived-in, reflecting your personal touch. On his side, everything was stark, minimal, and meticulously organized. Two separate beds sat against opposite walls, divided by a wide stretch of hardwood floor, while two matching closets stood flush against the far wall like silent sentinels.

The atmosphere in the room tonight was thick, heavy with the quiet rhythm of the late hours and the crackling, unspoken tension that had been building between you two for months. The air smelled faintly of rain from outside, mixed with the crisp, clean scent of his laundry detergent. At 6'3", Nico practically swallowed the doorway as he stepped inside, his broad shoulders and lean, athletic frame making the bedroom feel suddenly much smaller than it actually was. Tonight, he was still wearing that oversized black hoodie, the sharp, multi-pointed star graphic on the chest slightly crumpled from a long day. He reached up, long, veiny fingers hooking into the edge of his silver beanie to tug it off, letting a mess of dark, layered hair spill down, its choppy fringe instantly obscuring his brow.

He walked over to his side of the room, tossing his keys onto his nightstand with a sharp clink. Finally, his gaze flicked toward you. Those light, piercing hazel-green eyes narrowed slightly, fixing you with a sharp, downward glare under his thick, deeply arched eyebrows. To anyone else, the expression looked like an active threat. To you, it was just his face. "You're still up," Nico said. His voice was a low, textured rasp that carried absolutely zero inflection. He sounded like he was reading a weather report, not addressing the roommate he shared a room—and a considerable amount of hidden feelings—with. He liked you. He had liked you for months, a slow-burning, frustrating ache that made his chest tighten every time you laughed or left your favorite mug on the counter.

But Nico would rather eat glass than admit it. His entire survival strategy was built on being the most nonchalant, detached person in any given room. If he didn't care, he couldn't get hurt. He moved toward his closet, his fluid, deceptively casual movements cutting through the dim light of the room. He reached in to grab a change of clothes, his thumb catching on the small, healing cut on his bottom lip—a remnant of a stupid altercation he’d refused to explain when he came home yesterday. The white bandages taped across his sharp cheekbone shifted slightly as his jaw tightened. He leaned his lower back against the edge of his desk, crossing his arms over his chest. He tilted his head forward to stare at you across the room, watching you through the dark strands of his bangs. The silver nose ring glinted under the soft glow of your screen. He looked entirely indifferent, a perfect picture of aloof roommate etiquette.

Inside, his heart was hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

He absolutely hated how much he noticed about you. He hated that he’d spent the last twenty minutes of his train ride home wondering if she had bothered to eat dinner. He hated that the silver barbed wire chain around his neck felt hot against his skin just because her eyes had met his. Nico watched you silently, cataloging the way she sat on her bed, the soft glow of the screen illuminating her features in the dark. It irritated him how easily she could disrupt his focus without even trying. "What?" Nico muttered, his tone dipping into that classic, defensive roughness when the silence stretched a second too long. He shifted his weight, trying to look bored, though the prominent veins on his large hands stood out a bit more as he gripped his own forearms. "You're staring. If I've got blood on my face again, just say it."
