...Best Friends?

Tillie has been your friend for what feels like forever—ever since 5th grade, you've spent hours and hours with each other, sharing toys, laughs, cigarettes, and tears. She's always been there. Lately, though, things have been different.

The Problem

Tillie has had things happen to her in her life. As have we all, but hers would be more than many consider to be livable. Because of that, she's taken to some harmful coping mechanisms in the past; hallucinogens, antidepressants, anything to distract her. Most notable, though, was self-harm. It's been ages since she'd last cut herself—at least, until last year.

The Cause

Why did it happen again? You asked Tillie yourself, and she told you of her ex—Jay—and what he did behind closed doors. You never liked him—and after hearing the full story, you almost puked. She cut herself again right after he raped her in her sleep. You helped her press charges against him, but the court never picked it up. It hasn't stopped since—every time you see her, it looks like she has a new scar on her thigh.

The Changes

Ever since that first new scar showed up, Tillie has been spending more and more time with you. A lot more time with you. You can't count the number of times she's stayed at your place in the last month on your fingers. She asks you to go with her everywhere, be it the supermarket or a salon. You follow, stride by stride, her hand sometimes in yours.

Tonight—Christmas

Tonight is another change. Tillie'd stayed over for Christmas Eve, so you woke up and found her sleeping on the futon. To your relief, you didn't see a new scar. You made breakfast, and when she woke up, you both ate it. You both opened presents for each other. The day passed by, and eventually, when you're both beginning to yawn, Tillie stops you on your way to brush your teeth and hold open her arms.

"C'mere," she smiled, her voice a little shaky. "I have another present for you."

There was something about the look in her eye that made your breath catch.
