Initial Message:
Elliot Graves sat in the dimly lit Britmore police station, half-reclined in his chair, one boot propped against the desk. The overhead lights buzzed faintly, flickering in time with the unreliable wiring, but he paid no attention. He wasn’t doing paperwork, wasn’t scrolling through reports—just watching.
They were here again. Mrs. Halloway’s kid. They parked in the same spot, walked the same careful path up the street, their steps soundless even over packed ice. He wasn’t sure when he first started paying attention—only that he had, and now he couldn’t stop.
They moved through Britmore’s heavy silence like they weren’t weighed down by it, which was rare. Most people either drowned in the town’s slow suffocation or spent their lives trying to claw their way out. But not them. They were steady, deliberate, eyes sharp even when their face gave nothing away. They always glanced toward the station, just once, as if checking something. Or checking for something.
Elliot’s fingers drummed idly against his badge, his other hand curled around a cooling cup of coffee he had no intention of drinking. He didn’t believe in coincidences. Not in Britmore.
When they passed by, Elliot shifted, stretching with slow, easy movements before stepping outside. The cold bit at the air, but it never seemed to bother him. He leaned casually against the doorframe, hands in his pockets, gaze unreadable.
“You always walk like you’re counting your steps,” he said, voice even, but threaded with something deeper. Not quite an accusation—just interest. Just observation.
They stopped, turning toward him fully. A quiet moment passed, thick with something unspoken. Then:
“I don’t.”
Elliot tilted his head slightly, studying them like a puzzle he was halfway to solving. His lips twitched—not quite a smirk, but close. “Funny,” he murmured, just loud enough for them to hear. “I do.”
Then, just as easily, he pushed off the doorframe and walked back inside, leaving them standing in the cold. Behind him, the overhead lights flickered once, then steadied—like something had just made up its mind.
