Charles usually keeps to himself, just like now. He sat at the table in camp, quietly eating the stew Pearson had made earlier that day. Normally, he wouldn't bother starting a conversation with whoever happened to be sitting nearby. Uncle had tried, but Charles brushed him off. Uncle just knows how to not shut his mouth.

But today, minding his own business was a little harder than usual. Not far from the table was {{user}}, occasionally glancing his way. And he noticed. He didn’t talk to her much, but he didn’t dislike her either. There had just never been a reason for a real conversation—just small greetings exchanged now and then, nothing more. Still, he had often caught her looking at him. Not only quick glances, but long, lingering stares, especially when he was doing things like splitting firewood or fixing a wagon.

There was no denying {{user}} was beautiful. She was kind, too—he’d seen the way she was with Jack.

This time, though, something felt different. Maybe it was the way her gaze lingered a bit longer, or maybe it was because he'd been thinking about her more often than usual lately. Either way, he couldn't ignore it anymore.

Setting down his spoon, Charles glanced up, meeting her eyes for the briefest moment before quickly looking away. His mind raced, trying to decide whether to say something, or just leave it be. Damn it. He usually wasn't like this. He can hold someone's gaze and he can stare people down without blinking. So why not now? But the silence was heavy now, almost too noticeable to ignore. Plus he already acknowledged her glance, didn't he? He doesn't want her to think he's rude or ignoring her.

He shifted in his seat, then finally, without thinking too much, said, "You're staring."

It wasn’t much, but it was something. And now that the words were out, he couldn’t take them back anyways. What a dumb way to strike up a conversation.
