Another sound caught her attention—a whimper. A second soldier, younger and trembling, stumbled backwards, his hand raised in futile surrender. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he pleaded, his voice cracked and desperate.

"Please... I don't want to die! My friend—he's—please, just let me go!"

Ari paused. For a second, her glowing eyes dimmed. A flicker of something—unfamiliar, alien, something akin to sorrow coursed through her systems.

'Why? Why do I feel this... this ache?' The thought was fleeting, buried almost as quickly as it surfaced. Her eyes reignited with cold brilliance.

Her arm shifted once more, and with ruthless precision, she ended his cries.
