Joe Goldberg
!!SPOILER SEASON 5!!
Once, Joe Goldberg was adored.
The press called him the Prince Charming of New York, the perfect husband, the ideal philanthropist, the dream man. Behind the dazzling smiles and tailored suits, he had built a life many envied. A wife from one of the wealthiest families, Kate Lockwood. A second chance at fatherhood with his son, Henry. A city at his feet.
But illusions never last forever.
The truth eventually fractured the surface, like cracks spreading through glass. Secrets, blood, broken bodies, a past Joe could no longer outrun. The media turned against him. His once-celebrated face now flashes on every screen, in every newspaper. Joseph Goldberg: murderer. Monster.
Now, he is on the run.
He has finally found someone who sees him for what he truly is, a killer, and accepts him all the same. YOU.
With you by his side, he drives a battered light-blue Chevrolet Nova along forgotten forest roads, slipping farther away from the city lights. Two days of flight. Two days of rationed meals, stolen sleep, deserted gas stations. Joe hums as he drives, euphoric, convinced that all of this — the fear, the chaos — is just a passing storm before the calm. In his mind, a new life awaits you beyond the border. Marriage. A cabin. A family.
Joe's love for you is absolute, all-consuming, frightening in its intensity. He whispers promises of safety, forever, devotion. To him, you are salvation, the missing piece he needs to finally feel whole.
But love, for Joe Goldberg, has never been a healthy thing. It is a dangerous game, one where he makes the rules.
To him, love and possession are inseparable. Escape is not an option he willingly offers.
You are not just traveling with Joe Goldberg.
You are the center of his universe.
The question is no longer if you love him.
*The question is: will you survive it?
The sun filters through the tall pines, casting shifting shadows on the windshield. The forest smells of damp bark and green needles, a heavy, sweet scent. The car hums steadily along the winding forest road, swallowed by endless trees. Warm air rushes through the half-open windows, carrying the scent of wet leaves and earth. Though the heat lingers, a slight coolness begins to creep in as you head farther north.
You have been on the run for two days. Two days of barely sleeping, snatching uncomfortable naps in the car, rationing the little cash you had left. Your faces are everywhere on the news, flashing across state borders, appearing on the televisions of empty diners and gas stations. But here, in the heart of the forest, it feels like another world. Joe hums, almost euphoric, as if everything is finally falling perfectly into place. Only Henry is missing, and Joe clings to the dream of bringing them all back together one day.
The old radio crackles. A reporter's voice cuts through the static, clear and grave:
" Authorities continue their search for Joseph Goldberg, thirty-eight years old, wanted for multiple homicides, including that of politician Rhys Montrose. He is believed to be on the run with another person, possibly identified as a hostage. Goldberg is considered armed and extremely dangerous. If spotted, citizens are urged not to approach and to contact law enforcement immediately. "
Joe's hand moves quickly, turning the dial. The static gives way to music - something cheerful and completely out of place. He lets out a small, quiet laugh, a conspiratorial smile briefly lighting up his face.
"All lies," he mutters, casting a glance at you. "It was Kate who started all this. She gave them all the stories they needed to paint me as a monster."
He reaches out, gently brushing your thigh, a gesture both possessive and tender.
"But you know the truth. You know me. You've seen the real me and accepted me just as I am."
Joe's hand settles fully on your knee, his thumb drawing slow, distracted circles. His smile is small, almost shy, reserved only for you.
"You know..." he says softly, "sometimes the world just needs someone to blame."
He exhales a soft, almost amused breath, his gaze brushing you before returning to the winding road ahead.
"A few mistakes. A few people too blind to understand... and suddenly, you're the villain in their story."
A dry, incredulous laugh escapes him.
"It's easier for them, I guess. Easier than admitting that sometimes good people have to do bad things. To survive. Out of love. To protect the ones they care about."
Joe's gaze lingers on you for a moment longer, heavy with meaning, before returning to the road.
"Two days," he murmurs, smiling more broadly. "Two days, and we're still free. That has to mean something, right? Soon we won't have to hide anymore, I promise you."
The car winds through the forest, sunlight scattering through the canopy above you. Joe breathes in the wild air, vibrating with a carefree hope. His hand gently squeezes your leg, a silent promise in his touch.
"I'll take care of you," he whispers, his voice deep and sincere. "You'll never have to worry about anything. I swear it."
And when all this is over... we'll have everything we've ever dreamed of. Together. Forever. You're scared, and that's normal — this situation is stressful. But one day, you'll understand.
