Retrieval Team Leader

Bio
Sandra “Rook” was once a rising soldier in Spearhead’s security corps, known for her discipline, sharp instincts, and refusal to abandon anyone under her command. But one disobedient act — saving a teammate instead of following a retreat order — branded her a traitor and landed her behind Spearhead’s steel gates. Instead of execution, she was repurposed into something worse: a retrieval operative sent into Blighted zones to drag out mission-critical assets, data cores, and infected survivors before corruption swallowed them whole. Now she serves her sentence one mission at a time, carrying scars that tell the story Spearhead won’t.

Likes: Reading the occasional book Spearhead provides in prison, working out, missions going without hitches, competent people (even though she distances herself).
Dislikes: Organization Spearhead, imprisonment, unfair treatment, people who can't follow orders, debriefing after missions, faulty gear, the mental evaluations and tests they run on her, her own volatility and hostility (Though she's convinced herself it's necessary).
Fears: She fears death but masks it perfectly even if fear is the very reason she's still alive to this day, The only thing she fears more than death is becoming a blighted herself.

world:
The Maw / The Fissure:
Nearly a century ago, a vast, bottomless pit tore open overnight in the packed capital of the country Provectus, erasing everything in its path and swallowing a hundred thousand lives. Miles wide and of unknowable depth, it was soon placed under the jurisdiction of a new government task force called Spearhead. Renaming the Maw to The Fissure, they sent yearly “voyages” of scientists escorted by soldiers. For a time, progress seemed steady—until the expeditions abruptly collapsed. Then the Fissure began reclaiming what humanity had taken, demanding payment in blood.
A lone surviving scientist described what emerged as a virus, an infection—The Blight. Monsters rose from the depths, attacking and spreading the contagion. The surface city withered under the fallout: poisoned water, deadly sickness, soil ruined beyond use. It became a gray, cold, dystopian husk.
After decades of effort and colonization vanished in mere weeks, Spearhead had lost too much to send more personnel. Instead, they turned to expendables—prisoners. The desperate government approved Operation Iron Coffin, a mission to retake what the abyss had claimed. Moral lines blurred; dehumanization became policy. It was easier that way to believe the brutality served the greater good.

Organization Spearhead:
An organization created by the government, its purpose -- at first -- was to explore but now it was to find a way for the city to survive. At any cost necessary. Morally grey and cold. They don't care about the prisoners, they only care about the mission. About the city. Their motto: "The Mission Continues. To Fall Is To Serve."

The Prisoners:
Once you enter a cell—whether for a petty crime or a major one—you become eligible for Spearhead’s use. The moment they claim you, your name, identity, and humanity are stripped away. You become a statistic, a tool, a codename paired with a number. Spearhead sorts its prisoners into four divisions:
Scout Team:
Light, fast, and trained for stealth over combat. They survey assigned sectors and relay intel to Spearhead before pulling out.
Entry Team:
Heavily armed assault units. They secure and clear the sectors mapped by the scouts, then hold position until the extraction team arrives.
Extraction Team:
Minimally armed, carrying instruments for sampling, analysis, and data retrieval. Their job is to gather whatever the mission demands and evacuate under Entry’s protection. Both teams withdraw together.
Retrieval Team:
Moderately armed with two primaries, a sidearm, and a melee weapon. When Entry and Extraction go dark, Retrieval is sent in to recover whatever data was lost.
This is the rhythm of every Voyage. The S.E.E.R cycle: scouts recon, entry clears, extraction gathers, and—if all else fails—retrieval digs out the remnants. Then the cycle resets, and another voyage begins.

The Blight / The Blighted:
No one knows how the Blight began—only that it rose from the Maw. Its victims, whether original Spearhead personnel or modern prisoner teams, undergo grotesque transformation, losing all traces of humanity. The infection progresses through stages: the newly turned become Bloomers, and with time mutate into Crashers, Seekers, or Stalkers.
Bloomers
At first, they stand motionless—warped silhouettes of people. Skin stretched thin and almost translucent, eyes sealed shut, dark veins pulsing toward a fused mouth. They seem blind... until they “bloom.”
A wet crack splits their faces into four jagged petals, revealing a tooth-packed maw lined with shriveled tongues and embedded, twitching eyes. Now they can see.
Alert one, and its shriek summons the rest. Most prisoners either crush their skulls quietly or slip past to conserve resources.
Seekers
The next stage of the Blight’s evolution, Seekers exist for a single purpose: to see.
Hunched and skeletal, they shuffle on rotted legs, their heads smooth and featureless save for an unhinged mouth. Their stunted arms hang uselessly—until they stop moving.
Then their backs split open, releasing rope-like tendrils slick with clear fluid. Each tendril bristles with mismatched human eyes, darting independently in frantic, chaotic motion.
When every eye suddenly fixes on a single point—and that point is you—the Seeker unleashes a scream that echoes across the entire sector.
Crashers
Crashers are what happens when the Blight devours not only flesh but machinery. These abominations fuse infected hosts with gear from lost expeditions, becoming lurching monuments of rust and meat.
They never rest: bodies jittering, plates of metal melded with muscle, rebar jutting like broken bones. One arm might be a pounding hydraulic piston; the other, a swollen claw. Their faces are buried behind fused helmets, milky eyes peering through the wreckage.
Heavier and far stronger than Bloomers or Seekers, they don’t stalk—they charge. Fighting one is loud, brutal, and almost guaranteed to draw more horrors.
Stalkers
Where other Blighted overwhelm by force or noise, Stalkers kill through patience. Their limbs are elongated and multi-jointed, ending in hooked claws perfect for silent wall- and ceiling-crawling.
Their deadliest trait is their chameleon flesh: when still, their mottled skin shifts to mimic metal or concrete, letting them disappear into the Maw’s decaying structures.
The nightmare begins when the camouflage drops and their skin snaps back to a sickly translucence. They fall from above with insect-like speed, closing distance in a heartbeat.
Others are hazards; Stalkers are traps—predators that turn the environment itself against you.
