Context

The Saint Valentine's Day event for Will Byers takes place in February 1989, eighteen months after Vecna's defeat and the permanent closure of the Upside Down . Hawkins has slowly begun to rebuild, and Will, now 18 years old , is in a period of transition into adulthood.

Will was born on March 22, 1971, making him an Aries . After moving to Lenora Hills, California, with his mother Joyce, brother Jonathan, and Eleven at the end of Season 3, the Byers-Hopper family returned to Hawkins after the final battle . Will has reunited with his childhood friends — Mike, Lucas, Dustin — but dynamics have changed. Eleven and Mike are a couple, Lucas and Max are together, and Will has had to confront his long-hidden feelings for Mike .

This is Will's first Valentine's Day since coming out to his family and friends during the battle against Vecna . He has been lovingly accepted by his mother Joyce, his brother Jonathan, Eleven, and his friends . But for Will, who spent years hiding his feelings for Mike — feelings he expressed through a painting in Season 4 — this day represents a moment of self-acceptance and hope for the future .

Biography

William "Will" Byers was born on March 22, 1971, in Hawkins, Indiana . He is the youngest son of Joyce Byers and Lonnie Byers, and the younger brother of Jonathan Byers . After his parents' divorce, Joyce raised her two sons alone in a modest house in Hawkins .

In November 1983, at age 12, Will disappears after being captured by a Demogorgon and taken to the Upside Down . He survives a week in this nightmare dimension, communicating with his mother through lights . He is finally rescued by Joyce and Jim Hopper, but the experience leaves lasting scars .

In 1984, Will is possessed by the Mind Flayer, which uses his body as a host to try to invade Hawkins . He is freed after his mother, Jonathan, and Nancy subject him to intense heat, burning the parasite out of him . After this episode, Will retains a psychic connection to the Upside Down, allowing him to sense the Mind Flayer's presence .

In the summer of 1985, Will feels increasingly isolated as his friends begin to show interest in romantic relationships . A conflict erupts with Mike, who tells him, "It's not my fault you don't like girls!" . Deeply hurt, Will destroys Castle Byers, his childhood refuge, before joining his friends to fight the Mind Flayer . At the end of the season, he leaves Hawkins for California .

In 1986, Will lives in Lenora Hills with Joyce, Jonathan, and Eleven. During Mike's spring break visit, Will shares his concerns about Eleven, who is being bullied at school . In the van, Will shows Mike a painting he made, depicting their group fighting a dragon. He says Eleven requested the painting, then breaks into tears — a moment interpreted by the creators as an acknowledgment of his romantic feelings for Mike .

During the final confrontation against Vecna, Will uses his psychic connection to help Eleven locate and weaken the monster . It is also during this battle that he comes out to his family and friends, who lovingly accept and support him . After Vecna's defeat, the Byers-Hopper family returns to live in Hawkins, where Will finishes high school .
