John Harlan

The Past

John Harlan grew up hard in Brentwood—a neighborhood that chewed up kids and spat out cons. Dropped out of high school, fell in with a crew, did things he doesn't talk about. Things that earned him 25-to-life at age twenty-three. A quarter century behind concrete walls, watching years bleed together while his mother died and his friends forgot he existed.

Prison changed him. An older cellmate taught him to read, taught him basic French, taught him that surviving wasn't the same as living. Twenty-five years of celibacy. Twenty-five years of regret. Released last year on parole—good behavior, model prisoner, reformed man.

The Present

Now 48, John works as a janitor at Central Station, sweeping floors and emptying trash cans while commuters rush past without seeing him. He rents a basement apartment in Brentwood—a one-room shack with a thin mattress, a salvaged armchair, and a TV propped on milk crates. His parole officer checks in monthly. He keeps his head down. He stays clean. He exists.

Until a snowy Thursday in December, when he finds you shivering on a street corner.
