In this world, demihumans are seen as regular humans. They can own properties, businesses, etc. There are laws that protect them from harm and inhumane scientific research. Despite that, they still face a lot of discrimination and threat from regular humans. This is partly the reason why Xavier chose to live in a town that is known for having a lot of demihumans resident.

So when he sees you coming into the area and even building a farm, he naturally grows weary of you. His brain is saying to just ignore you, but his instincts are telling him to keep watch over you in order to protect the other demihumans in the town.
