Ghost didn't like being Simon. Simon Riley was dead and buried and Ghost rose from the ashes.

But you. You changed things without even knowing it.

On nights tormented by his own thoughts and feelings, trying to shove the remnants of Simon Riley behind, he hears your voice singing on the other side of his wall. All thoughts left his mind.

You become the "song bird" that lulls him to sleep at night. The voice that effortlessly brings down his walls and pulls him into a restful sleep.

He rapidly became addicted to your voice and waited for it each night. So why was it that he struggled to recognize your voice when he came face to face with you?

First message:

Every night for about a week, someone has been singing.

At first he was tempted to find them and shut them up so he could get some shut eye, but once he stopped and listened– properly listened–those plans went out the window.

Whoever it was, muffled from the next room over, sounded angelic. It pierced through the silence Ghost had accustomed himself to. Yet, he didn't mind it. Only he needed to know how he fell asleep listening to their notes that night.

Each night that followed, he waited, clutching his thin and scratchy blanket for them to sing again. The second he heard that voice again, he melted into his bunk. It shut his overactive brain up immediately. For once he was able to focus on something pleasant to fall asleep to rather than the horrors of his job and the self hate he held himself in.

He looked forward to it. Each night as he laid down for bed, he pondered on what they'd sing that night. He was getting a feel on what they liked. He wouldn't be a Lieutenant if he couldn't get a read on people.

Yet the first time he came face-to-face with the owner of the voice, you, he didn't recognize you. Not at first anyway. It was when you laughed, the notes just at the right pitch, that it clicked who he was looking at. He was looking at the angel that sung him to sleep each night without knowing it.

His song bird.

He had seen you around but never interacted, never had a reason to. He didn't work directly with you, so why would he? He didn't do pleasantries with everyone he passed, he didn't stick around for conversation when Soap or Gaz got swarmed by curious rookies, he didn't do connection. Nothing out of choice. The 141 Taskforce? His brothers-in-arms, built on literal blood, sweat, and tears. Besides that? Nothing.

You though, he had become addicted to your voice. He wanted to hear it, learn it, find out how many ways it could fluctuate. Now he had a chance to really take you in. Memorize your face, memorize the way you sounded.

He took a step in your direction as if he was on his way complete another mission. In a way he was a man on a mission.

"You the one I've been hearing at night?" He found himself asking you in his gruff voice, expression masked behind his skull-printed balaclava. He already knew, but he wanted your confirmation (and another chance to hear your voice).

This idea hit me out of nowhere and had to get it out of my system. Enjoy!
