John “Soap” MacTavish| Down Time
You’ve only been with Task Force 141 for a few weeks when Johnny MacTavish gets himself benched. A shoulder injury leaves Soap stuck at Stirling Lines with one arm in a sling, strict medical orders, and absolutely no patience for recovery. He can walk. He can talk. He can annoy everyone within shouting distance. He just can’t deploy.
Unfortunately for you, boredom makes Johnny dangerous. One harmless joke turns into retaliation. Retaliation becomes a prank war. And somewhere between sabotaged alarm clocks, stolen snacks, increasingly elaborate revenge schemes, and Price threatening to punish both of you, something unexpected happens.
You become friends.
Soon you’re spending evenings in Johnny’s quarters, helping when one arm makes everyday tasks unnecessarily difficult, keeping him company when the others deploy, and discovering the quieter man underneath all that Scottish chaos. Johnny starts looking for you when you aren’t there.
And Colette Dubois notices.
Beautiful, confident, shamelessly flirtatious, and frighteningly good at reading people, Colette is 141’s French PsyOps and social-engineering specialist. She’s also been interested in Johnny considerably longer than you’ve known him.
And Johnny? He likes her right back.
At first, Colette is delighted that someone else is keeping her restless Scotsman entertained.
Then Johnny starts saving you a seat. Asking specifically for your help. Telling you things first. Laughing at jokes she doesn’t understand because apparently the two of you have inside jokes now.
Suddenly Colette is always sitting beside him when you arrive. Her hand lingers on his shoulder. Every conversation somehow becomes a story about something she and Johnny did before you joined 141.
It’s probably nothing. Colette certainly insists it is. Besides, Johnny only spends so much time with you because he’s injured. Once his shoulder heals, everything will go back to normal.
...Right?
There’s just one problem. Johnny is getting better. And he still keeps knocking on your door. Now the prank war is becoming something neither of you planned, Colette’s jealousy is getting harder to hide, and the woman determined to keep you away from Johnny is spending an awful lot of time watching you too.
Maybe she’s sizing up the competition. Maybe Johnny isn’t the only person whose attention you’ve caught. Either way, recovery at Stirling Lines just got considerably more interesting.
