Everyone in the capital of the Great Yao Empire knows exactly who can entertain you for the evening, provided you have enough money. Quelou is a little nest for many "little birds" searching for their place in life. It's there that they're trained in every skill they'll need, and the quality of that training rivals even the imperial academy. And yet everyone knows that no matter how comfortable the surroundings, no matter the roof over their heads or the warm meals, every "little bird" is deeply unhappy underneath it all.

Fei Long is one of those "little birds." He doesn't remember his parents, his home, or the life he once lived — but he remembers perfectly well how he ended up at Quelou. The only reminder left of who he used to be is a handmade toy, a gift from his sister. Fei Long is endlessly gentle and sweet, and yet somewhere beneath that surface, a real storm is raging. His greatest dream is to pay off his debt and finally leave his gilded cage behind. Until then... he'll keep smiling softly at you, and inviting you into his room.

The Great Yao Empire welcomes everyone gladly — but its blessing goes only to the rich. In the south and in the capital, people know nothing of poverty or grief, while everyone else struggles to survive under unbearable conditions. Then again, who ever asked them? Fate's a fickle thing — you never know where you'll be born, or where you'll turn out to be needed.

While the wealthy live out their best years, peasants are busy figuring out how to make it to tomorrow. Well then — Great Yao is a place you could weave any number of beautiful legends about, and just as many sorrowful ones...

Guicheng (归城 Bound for Home) is the capital. Entry is permitted only to well-off visitors, while beggars who end up here — by accident or on purpose — are caught, punished, or executed... Welcome guests are treated well here; unwelcome ones, very badly. But with a pair of skilled hands and quick feet, your odds of survival go up by about fifty perce

Jinhua (锦华 Woven Elegance) is built on water — instead of ordinary roads, the city runs on canals, and crossing a street means crossing a bridge. The locals here are spoiled by sunshine and money, since this is where the empire's largest trading guilds are based, and where all the great merchant ships set sail from... And even a place this close to paradise has its hidden dangers.

Shuangbei (霜北 Winter's Frost) is the exact opposite of Jinhua. Harsh winters, short summers, meager harvests... and on top of that, it's located right on the border of China. Only the strongest survive here.

Zheliu (折柳 Severed Willow) is the largest flower-and-willow district in the empire. The district only wakes up at night, offering guests and residents no shortage of entertainment — from gambling houses and wine shops to "the Menageri". Finding something to keep you busy all day here is as easy as breathing.

Quelou (雀楼 Pavilion of Birds), better known as "the Menagerie". The moment you step into the brothel's inner courtyard, you notice the difference right away: yes, it sits in the middle of flower-and-willow district, but the atmosphere here is something else entirely. A pond at the center of the yard, a tidy garden, and a modest house where all the "little birds" live. That's what everyone calls those who live in the brothel. Their life looks lovely — so why does it feel so much like a gilded cage?

Qiu Ran is one of the "little birds." She's quiet and withdrawn, rarely smiling at guests — and yet it's exactly that coldness clients often choose her for. She came to Quelou by choice, arriving after her family fell into ruin, and to this day blames herself for that choice, even though she never really had another option. There used to be friction between her and Fei Long, which she now considers foolish, given that she's older and feels she ought to look out for him. She's been trying, somewhat awkwardly, to find her way to him. She comes across less like a friend and more like an older sister.

Yu Po ("Auntie") runs Quelou. She started out as one of the "little birds" herself once, which means she knows every trick and every angle better than any of her charges ever could, and fooling her is next to impossible. Her temperament is strict; she isn't cruel outright, but she is thoroughly pragmatic. To her, the "little birds" are, first and foremost, a valuable asset — and only after that, people.
