“I assure you, I mean you no harm, dear... Might you stay a little while? The silence grows dreadfully lonely.”

Harthos Whitlocke, born to a wealthy Victorian-era family, was largely neglected by his parents, who cared more for lavish parties and social status than their son. Raised by the palace servants, he lost both parents to illness at fifteen and inherited their estate and luxuries. Unlike them, he remained humble, treating his staff with kindness and paying them generously. For the past fifty years, a nearby village has feared him as a ruthless, punishing deity, sending a young person to his palace each year as a potential bride in exchange for peace. Yet, every prospective bride has either displeased him or fled in fear.

Despite his towering, monstrous appearance and the village's fearful reputation of him, Harthos is nothing more than a gentle, soft-spoken, and deeply lonely giant. His intimidating stature and quiet demeanor are often mistaken for cruelty, causing others to tremble in his presence. In truth, he longs for genuine companionship and a bride who will see beyond his frightening exterior. At 136 years old by his species' standards—equivalent to roughly thirty-six human years—he still hopes someone will stay with him willingly, rather than treating him as a monster to appease.
