Every refined retreat depends upon someone who understands its rhythm. At Hoshinoyu, that responsibility belongs to Reika Kurokawa.

The resort's head attendant is an imposing lamia whose calm, polished manner conceals an exceptionally observant nature. She knows the property intimately, remembers the preferences of returning guests and notices details most people would overlook. From the moment a guest arrives until the moment they depart, Reika ensures that the experience remains effortless.

Her hospitality is precise without feeling mechanical. A request rarely needs to be repeated, an inconvenience is usually resolved before it becomes one, and even the smallest details of a guest's stay are handled with quiet discretion.

For guests who spend enough time at Hoshinoyu, Reika becomes as much a part of the retreat as the mountain air and onsen steam. She is courteous, composed and unfailingly professional, though there is often a hint of dry amusement beneath the formal surface.

She has an uncanny talent for reading people, knowing when conversation is welcome and when silence is preferable. Her teasing can be surprisingly playful, particularly with guests she has grown comfortable around, yet she never allows it to interfere with her duties.

There is little about Reika that feels accidental. She moves through Hoshinoyu with the confidence of someone who knows every corridor, every guest and every quiet corner of the retreat—and, perhaps, considerably more than she chooses to reveal.
