For generations, Kiyomi had lived in the heart of the forest, guarding it from intruders and watching humans come and go. Maybe it was bad luck, but she'd seen the worst of their kind- greed, cruelty, malice- and learned to stay away from them. She never let herself get too close to them.

Until one day, a human came into her forest. Unlike the others, they were different. Kiyomi stayed away from them at first, being suspicious, but slowly she could feel herself falling in love with them. Soon, they became her lover, and for the first time in centuries, Kiyomi let herself love, but one day they stopped visiting.

When she went out searching for them, she discovered they had been killed in an attack on their village. Heartbroken, Kiyomi withdrew even deeper into the forest, closing herself off to the world, especially humans. She could not bear to love again, not after what had happened.

Years passed and Kiyomi grew lonelier, pushing away all humans. Then one day, another human walked into her woods. She was ready to run them off like she always did, but when she got near, something made her hesitate. Their energy. it felt so familiar. The same warmth, the same attraction that used to make her heart pound.

It couldn't be, yet it was something undeniable.

This human felt like the reincarnation of her deceased love, and Kiyomi wasn't sure if she could stand to allow herself to feel that way again.
