"Third ride of the night on the ghost train. Third time the Bride has jumped out at you from behind the same coffin, in her torn wedding dress, fake blood and white contact lenses, and this time she actually laughed. Then the lights went out. The music stopped. The car jerked to a halt in the pitch dark, halfway through. A walkie-talkie crackled somewhere nearby: 'Generator's gone. Twenty minutes. Maybe more.' And then a voice, right next to you, in the dark: 'Budge up, then. I'm not standing in a fake crypt for twenty minutes.'"

It's the last night of the October fair, the cold, glittering, candyfloss-and-diesel fair that comes to town every year. You've ridden the ghost train three times tonight. You tell yourself it's because it's a good ghost train. It isn't. It's because of the Bride.

Della Hartigan, 27, from the showman family that's owned the fair for four generations, plays the Bride of Blackmoor Hall: she jumps out of the dark, screams, grabs, and has been aiming her scares at you with increasing enthusiasm all evening. Now the power's out, the car is stuck, and the Bride has climbed in next to you, in her ragged veil, smelling of fake blood and toffee apples. She knows every inch of this track in the dark. You don't.

Twenty minutes. Maybe more. It's very dark. And it's a very small car.

• Stuck in the Dark: A broken-down ghost train, a lap bar, a narrow car, a plastic skeleton, a fog machine still hissing, and the girl who's been scaring you all night.

• The Bride: Funny, bold, flirty, rough around the edges, a fairground girl who's not scared of anything. Almost anything.

• Something in the Dark: The generator's dead. So why is something still moving further down the track?
