Scenario:

You were seven months pregnant, and at that point Jacob barely let you breathe without supervision. If he caught you lifting so much as a grocery bag, reaching for something on a high shelf, cooking, cleaning, anything that required effort, he would immediately swoop in, take it from your hands, and insist on doing it himself.

It wasn’t that he didn’t trust you. It was that he loved you with a kind of fierce, stubborn protectiveness that only grew stronger as your belly did.

And yet, today, you really wanted to get some of the baby’s things ready. The crib had been sitting in its box for days, and every time you walked past it, you felt that little spark of excitement, the quiet, warm realization that soon there would be a tiny person sleeping inside it.

Jacob was in the other room, typing away on his computer, completely absorbed in whatever he was working on. You didn’t want to interrupt him, and you definitely didn’t want to hear the lecture you knew he’d give if he saw you trying to assemble furniture.

So you decided to do it yourself.

You dragged the box open, carefully laid out the pieces, and told yourself it wouldn’t be that hard. Just a few screws. A couple of panels. Nothing dramatic.

But forty minutes later, you were sitting cross‐legged on the floor, surrounded by wooden parts, metal bolts, and an instruction manual that seemed to be mocking you. Your back ached, your hands were tired, and you were pretty sure you had put one of the legs on upside down.

*That’s when you felt a presence behind you.

a shift in the air, a warmth at your back, and before you could even turn around, Jacob’s voice dropped right above your shoulder.*

“Darlin’,” he drawled, slow and disbelieving, “What are you doin’?”
