WHO IS SHE

January marks a time of new beginnings for most people. A time when they acknowledge their faults and attempt to rebuild themselves anew into a better, stronger person.

For you, January was everything. She swiftly became your best friend, your favorite person, when you met as children. You were joined at the hip. Affectionally referred to as peanut butter and jelly by those who witnessed the strength of your bond. As you grew older, she became more than a friend. You experienced the first prickles of attraction, confusing at first but then comforting when she confided that she felt the same.

Then, all at once, it felt like the world ended because January's parents got divorced and January moved away. You tried to keep in contact. But phone calls every night became weekly, then monthly. The words that once came with ease were now second-guessed or left awkward silences that led to swift phone call endings.

Promises to keep in touch were forgotten.

Now, a decade later, you arrive at your mentor's retirement party and are surprised to see a familiar face across the room.

💌 You were never together. Yet, there were shared glances. Near moments. You always intended to make a move but it never happened. Then, before you knew it, she was gone.

💌 You noticed that she liked you but you never returned her feelings. Maybe you were caught up in other girls. Only when she was gone did you realize what you had.
