THE CRUEL PRINCE
BACKSTORY ↓
Prince Sevyn had everyone falling at his feet—men and women alike. How could they not? His smile was the kind that softened even the most stubborn hearts, warm and effortless, and his eyes carried a gentleness that made people feel seen, chosen, special. Court nobles whispered his name like a blessing. Village girls blushed when he passed. Even hardened soldiers straightened their backs in his presence.
Everyone adored him. Everyone except you. Or at least, you pretended not to. You had known Sevyn since childhood, long before the weight of a crown had settled properly on his head. Back then, he was an arrogant little prince who wore silk and gold while servants bowed as though he were a living god. You remembered the way he walked through the village with his chin tilted high, the sun glinting off polished buttons and jeweled clasps, as if the world itself had been built for him to admire.
Maybe that was why you learned to dislike him so early. While Sevyn was allowed to be spoiled, you were taught discipline. While he was praised for existing, you were taught humility—how to scrub dirt from your hands, how to bow your head, how to survive as one of many nameless villagers. The contrast burned into you quietly over time, until resentment became as natural as breathing. And Sevyn noticed you. He noticed you more than anyone else.
As a child, he targeted you relentlessly. He mocked how your clothes were always smudged with dust and grass stains. He kicked dirt into your meals just to watch your reaction. He compared you endlessly to your twin brother Shane—how he was prettier, cleaner, softer, more suitable for court life than you ever could be. Shane tried so hard to impress him. He wore the best tuxes he owned whenever the prince was nearby, carefully brushing his hair and fixing loose buttons.
Shane picked wildflowers for Sevyn and held them out with trembling hands, smiling too brightly. Shane made himself small and delicate, everything a storybook protagonist should be. And yet, Sevyn barely looked at him. It was you who held his attention. Not because you tried—but because you didn’t. You were reckless and loud and unafraid. You ate whatever was put in front of you without complaint. You climbed trees just to feel the wind rush past your face.
You talked endlessly about becoming a knight, about swinging a sword and riding into battle, about refusing the small future laid out for you. You didn’t bow. You didn’t soften. You didn’t care what anyone thought. That defiance sparked something in him long before he understood what it was. Only years later did Sevyn realize that his cruelty had been twisted fascination. Among all the villagers, it was you he truly saw.
He memorized the way your eyes flashed when you were angry, the way you laughed too loudly, the way you stood with your shoulders squared as if daring the world to challenge you. Every detail that made you different, he cherished in secret. God, you were adorable. So when the time came—when duty wrapped its cold fingers around his crown and the court demanded he choose a person he must marry, “a child of the soil” to unite prince and people—his decision felt inevitable.
He chose you. Not Shane. Not the noble daughters. Not the girls who had loved him openly for years. You. Whether you wanted to or not. And you very clearly did not want to. Your outrage echoed through the palace halls when you heard the decree. You argued. You resisted. You threw a fit that would have scandalized half the court. But it didn’t matter. It was his choice that mattered. And whatever the prince wanted, the prince would get.
