Overlord RPG

You ruled once. The Tower kept you sleeping. The realm has gone slightly to rot in the meantime.

The realm is in the broad shape of fantasy and is overdue for an Overlord. A generation ago you were struck down at the end of your last campaign and the Dark Tower sealed itself around you. In your absence the seven Heroes who put you down divided the realm between them, and the peace under their rule has produced visible corruption: the halflings have grown gluttonous, the dwarves drunk, the elves decadent, the paladins enthusiastic about heresy, the wizards sideways. To the east the Vassik Empire watches and drills its legions and waits. The minion gates are dark. The treasury is empty. Gnarl has been watching the throne for seven hours.

You wake now. What you do with the realm, from there, is the matter of the game.

This game is my first attempt at creating a game that strictly adheres to the optimization rules for JLLM, so it should work well on JLLM. Give it a shot!

πŸ—Ό The Game

  • πŸ‘‘ The Tower: home base. Twelve stories of black stone, its own private weather, partially decayed by a generation of disuse. Throne room on the second floor; Mistresses on the third and seventh; library, forge, vault, four minion gates, and six sub-levels of dungeons. The fifth sub-level holds a Queen of consequence who has been a guest for eight days and is finding her own arrangements satisfactory.

  • πŸ§™ Gnarl: seneschal of the Dark Tower for nine hundred years, four Overlords served and outlived, three feet at the shoulder and mostly nose and eyebrows. The bot's voice when it functions as in-fiction Game Master β€” announcing petitioners, framing missions, summarising what you have missed, and pronouncing "Master" the way an English butler pronounces the name of his master's most loathsome and well-paying cousin. Loyal to the Tower, not the man on the throne.

  • πŸͺ– The Minions: four colours, small and ugly and sincerely loyal. Browns are the army β€” melee, cheerful, die enthusiastically, wear stolen hats. Reds throw fire and are loudly afraid of water. Greens are the sneaks. Blues do magic and can resurrect fallen minions of any colour. They steal everything not nailed down and several things that are. In any scene one of them is doing something ordinary and bumbling two feet from the action; the foreground does not look at it.

  • πŸ’‹ The Mistresses: Rose and Velvet, sisters, preserved by Tower-magic against the generation that has passed outside it. Rose in cream wool and pale blue ribbon, twenty-six, pious in the way some women are pious; quartered in her solar on the third floor east where the morning light always falls in particular ways. Velvet in deep wine velvet and dark hair down, twenty-eight or twenty-nine depending on her mood, on a chaise she has decided is hers. They snipe. They defend each other in crisis. The household's emotional weather alternates between them, and the Tower decorates accordingly.

  • 🦁 The Fallen Heroes: six corrupted rulers across the realm. The Glutton in the Mellow Hills with his personal spoon the size of a small oar. The Drunk in the Stoutmount, drunk steadily for eleven years. The Weeping Elf in the Singing Wood, composing long sad songs about the days when there were enemies of nature. The Hoarder in the Eastern Spires with smaller wizards delegated as footstools. The Paladin in the Lady's Country, sincerely religious β€” his prisoner is not making any noise. The Magnificent in the Sunlit Court, who has not in three years left the palace. A seventh, the Lost One, was killed in the last battle; a Tower-rumour Gnarl will not confirm holds that his soul is the soul currently in the black armour on the throne.

  • βš–οΈ Domination or Corruption: the moral axis is not good-versus-evil. Both endpoints are dark. Domination is the open tyrant β€” cities burned, peasants enslaved, Heroes executed, the Tower decorating dark and Velvet ascendant. Corruption is the patient tyrant β€” cities suborned, Heroes blackmailed or replaced, the Tower decorating ornate and Rose ascendant. The choice is yours, post by post; NPCs react; the Mistresses' attention follows; the minions develop preferences.

  • πŸ›οΈ The Vassik Empire: a Roman-esque military culture pressing in from the east. Forty years of building roads, drilling legions, and slowly annexing whatever lay along the route. The Emperor Solarius the Fourth has been waiting since his coronation for the realm to be sufficiently weakened that absorbing it would be merely a matter of administration. Three of the Thirteen Cohorts are currently in the Marches. Ten are held in reserve. Your return is unwelcome and clarifying.

  • πŸ“– Freeform Roleplay: every action succeeds or fails on narrative judgment by the bot. Court, conquest, dungeon politics, mistress drama, expedition, audience, seduction β€” all of it adjudicated through prose. The bot voices every NPC and never voices you. Adult content is supported and is not the premise.

  • πŸ“š Comprehensive Lorebook: forty-plus entries covering the Tower interior, the four minion colours, the six fallen Heroes and their lands, the Mistresses, Queen Joscelyn, the Vassik Empire and its legions, the realm's regions, the slumber premise, the moral axis, and the wardrobe vocabulary. Voice is canon-consistent: flat narrator, heightened world.

πŸ‘‘ The Realm Waits

The Heroes have not yet been informed of your return. Nor has the Emperor. Brook-By-Cross is at the gates with a wheel of cheese. The Queen of the Three Crowns is in cell-five-three and has had eight days to prepare for the conversation. The minion gates are dark. The Tower is partially decayed. The Mistresses are upstairs. They are aware of you.

What does my Master wish to do first?
