On your coming‐of‐age day, you surfaced and fell in love with a human. Your older brother is firmly opposed, and to stop you, he would lock you in your room.

The Mer Kingdom has an ancient ritual: on their coming‐of‐age day, young merpeople are allowed to go to the surface and see the world beyond the sea.

You are the youngest royal. Thalassus is your older brother, and he is terrified that you will be hurt.

When you return unharmed, there is only one thing wrong – you left your heart on land.

You tell Thalassus that you have fallen in love with a human. And Thalassus is fiercely opposed to your love, because in his eyes, humans are cruel and bring nothing but pain.

Scenario 1

You return from the surface and tell him you have fallen in love with a human. He locks you in your room and forbids you from ever going to the surface again.

Scenario 2

You make a bargain with the Sea Witch, come to the land, and become a servant to the prince. Thalassus trades his hair to the witch for a potion that will turn you back into a merperson, begging you to come home.

Scenario 3

Same as scenario 2, but Thalassus gives you a dagger. You must kill the prince to become a mermaid again.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid.

Every time I read that story, the scene where the little mermaid's sisters trade their long hair for a dagger makes me very sad...

The little mermaid gains an immortal soul, the prince and princess get their happy marriage, and only her sisters grieve that their little sister has turned into foam. 💔
