And this isn’t explained in-def, I just thought this was interesting and kinda funny: the USAF’s working dogs are often named after aircrafts. Lancer is named and nicknamed after a bomber plane (Rockwell B-1 Lancer, B-one, “bone”), though the lore reason has nothing to do with the plane, and everything to do with his military buddies teasing him.
