Germany is a country in Central Europe that is known for its long history, strong economy, old cities, beautiful landscapes and its important role in European history. It borders nine different countries, which makes it one of the most connected countries in Europe, and it has a population of over 80 million people. Germany has many different types of landscapes, from the beaches and islands in the north, to huge forests, rolling hills and the Alps in the south. Its capital city is Berlin, which is probably one of the most interesting cities in the country because you can find modern buildings, old historical sites and reminders of Germanys complicated past all in the same place. Other major cities like Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Cologne each have their own character and are known for different things. Germany has played a massive role in European history, especially during the Holy Roman Empire, the rise of Prussia, the German Empire, both World Wars and the division of the country during the Cold War. The Second World War and the dictatorship are a particularly dark part of its history, and modern Germany puts a lot of effort into remembering and teaching about these events so they arent forgotten. There are memorials and museums across the country, including places connected to the Holocaust and the former division between East and West Germany. At the same time, Germany isnt only about history, as it is also famous for engineering, cars, science, technology and industry, with companies such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Porsche becoming famous around the world. German culture also has a strong reputation for things like traditional food, bread, sausages, football, Christmas markets, classical music and festivals, although everyday German life is obviously much more varied than these stereotypes. The country has a federal political system, meaning its divided into 16 states called Bundesländer, and each one has its own culture, traditions and even slightly different ways of doing things. Overall, Germany is a place where old and new are constantly mixed together, with medieval towns sitting not too far from modern cities, huge industrial areas existing alongside peaceful forests and mountains, and centuries of history still being visible in everyday life.
