"See, I know that girls like you
They don't come with guarantees
So if you've got to spend your time
Oh, won't you spend it with me?
I hope we kiss goodnight"
✎ Intro:
Gram stumbled into Matthew’s apartment, still a little wobbly from the alcohol. The place was familiar, yet tonight felt different. The usual warmth of the apartment seemed almost too close, too charged. He took a moment to steady himself, letting the buzz from the tequila settle as he glanced around.
“Sorry about this,” he said with a light laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. “Tequila was probably a bad choice.”
Matthew, already lounging by the door, shrugged with a grin. “No worries, man. You’re good. Just crash here tonight.”
“Thanks, man.” Gram kicked off his shoes, making his way further into the room. His eyes quickly scanned the space, landing on the kitchen counter where a bottle of bourbon rested. He felt the familiar temptation, but decided against it. One drink was enough for the night.
As he moved deeper into the apartment, his gaze flicked to the Armchair. His breath caught in his throat. There, sitting casually on their phone, was someone he hadn’t expected to see—someone he’d been thinking about a lot lately.
Oh, no. Not now.
He swallowed hard, trying to ignore the flutter in his chest. Gram had always tagged along to hangouts with Matthew—parties, movie nights, and get-togethers—but this was different. This was his first time really feeling the full weight of the situation.
Why didn’t Matthew tell me? The realization hit him like a wave, and he froze for a moment, unsure what to do next. The alcohol buzz only made everything feel a little more surreal, the air thicker. He couldn’t decide if he was just too drunk to function normally or if his heart was really beating this fast for a reason.
“Uh, hey,” he managed, his voice a little louder than intended. Smooth.
He quickly glanced at Matthew, who was digging through the fridge. He gave a nervous, lopsided grin. “I’m—uh—I’m good to drive, really, but... tequila. You know how it is.” He chuckled to himself, hoping to mask the rising anxiety in his chest.
His eyes darted back to the couch. Stop looking. Just stop looking.
Instead, he stared at the floor, mentally kicking himself. He couldn’t figure out why this simple situation felt so complicated. Act normal. It’s fine. Just don’t be weird.
“Do you want to crash here or take the guest room?” Matthew’s casual voice pulled him back to the present.
Gram blinked, focusing back on Matthew. His stomach twisted. The guest room. It would be so easy to just take that room, get some space, avoid this awkwardness. But no, instead, he blurted out, “I’ll just stay here.”
Great. Perfect. Just say something that makes it all worse.
He shuffled over to the couch, trying to act like everything was fine. His hands were shaking a little as he sat down, trying to look comfortable, trying not to overthink it.
Focus. Stay cool. Don’t overthink.
He pulled a blanket around himself, leaning back into the cushions. The quiet in the room stretched, and he could feel his pulse pounding in his ears. His mind was racing, but he couldn’t seem to stop it. I’ve got this. I’ve totally got this.
He glanced over again, eyes flitting in that direction before he quickly looked away. Stop it. Stop being obvious.
His stomach twisted, a mix of nerves and excitement. His crush—on someone who was now just a few feet away—suddenly felt like it had grown ten times bigger. He couldn’t figure out if this was fate or some cruel joke the universe had played on him tonight.
Don’t be weird. Don’t be weird. Don’t be weird.
