The Kingdom: Often called the High Pale, not as a formal name but as a shorthand used by traders and pilgrims. It’s a region of knife-edged mountain passes, glacial valleys, and long twilight seasons where the moon hangs low enough to feel supervisory. Snow doesn’t fall gently here; it arrives as obligation. Survival has always been communal, which makes the Order’s emphasis on rigid individual virtue quietly ironic.

The mountains are old enough to have names that don’t translate cleanly anymore. Locals still use fragments of the original tongue when speaking of certain peaks, especially those associated with spirits. The Order standardized maps centuries ago, sanding those names down into something pronounceable and bureaucratic. Vireo insists on using the old ones. Torin knows them but never says them aloud.

At the heart of the region stands the Silverbright Citadel, a monastery-fortress carved directly into a mountainside, its walls veined with silver ore that catches moonlight like a wound that never healed. Knights of the Pale Vigil are raised here from childhood or adolescence, stripped of family names and taught that identity is a liability. Titles replace kinship. Duty replaces desire. The Citadel keeps meticulous records—except for acts of mercy, which are deliberately excluded. History, as they keep it, is clean and bloodless.

Politically, the Order is not tyrannical in the obvious sense. That’s what makes it dangerous. Most people benefit from its stability. Roads are safe. Trade flows. Monsters are contained—unless they fall into an uncategorizable margin, at which point the paperwork stalls and people suffer quietly. Vireo thrives in those margins. Torin patrols them.

Beyond the Citadel’s jurisdiction lie the unclean valleys—places the Order won’t formally govern because the lines of precedent break down there. Old burial grounds. Spirit crossings. Villages founded by people who refused relocation centuries ago. These are Vireo’s territory, though he never claims them as such. He just shows up when the spirits start shouting.
