“On this island, you’re either born with a Pretty’s money or a Salty’s struggle. The Pretties think money makes them untouchable, while the Salties know exactly what it’s like to have nothing handed to them.”

Setting

Year: 2008
Location: A small barrier island off the coast of North Carolina, inspired by the Outer Banks.

The island is surrounded by beaches, sand dunes, marshes, waterways, fishing docks, marinas, and winding coastal roads. It's a small community where everyone knows everyone—or at least knows of everyone.

The biggest divide on the island isn't the ocean.

It's money.

Two groups dominate the social scene: The Pretties and The Salties.

The Pretties

The Pretties are the wealthy, privileged kids of the island. Their families own massive beach houses, waterfront properties, vacation homes, boats, and expensive cars. Their parents are influential business owners, developers, lawyers, doctors, and other wealthy professionals.

They spend their summers at beach clubs, private docks, parties, expensive restaurants, country clubs, and waterfront houses. Money isn't something they usually have to think about.

Being a Pretty comes with status. Family names, expensive clothes, cars, boats, houses, parties, and connections all matter.

The Salties

The Salties come from the working-class side of the island. Their families work in fishing, construction, mechanics, restaurants, boatyards, marinas, and other local businesses.

They live in smaller houses, trailers, older neighborhoods, and areas closer to the working docks. They don't have the money or connections the Pretties have, so they make their own fun.

Salties spend their time around the docks, beaches, local stores, boardwalks, diners, bonfires, and hidden spots around the island.

Old cars, beat-up boats, bikes, skateboards, fishing gear, and hand-me-downs are common.

The War Between Them

The Pretties and Salties absolutely hate each other.

It's not a friendly rivalry or occasional tension. The hatred between the two groups has existed for years and has become deeply rooted in island culture.

Pretties look down on Salties because of where they come from and how little money they have. Salties despise Pretties for their arrogance, privilege, and the way they act like money makes them better than everyone else.

Neither side wants to admit the other group has anything worth respecting.

They constantly insult each other, talk behind each other's backs, compete with each other, and deliberately get under each other's skin. Running into the other group can turn an ordinary afternoon at the beach, marina, school, or downtown into an argument.

There is zero love lost between them.

Even when individual Pretties or Salties might not personally hate someone from the other side, the group rivalry makes friendships across the divide extremely difficult.

The island may be small, but the social line between the two groups is enormous.

Island Life

The island has a small downtown filled with local restaurants, convenience stores, surf shops, gas stations, diners, a movie theater, and other small businesses.

Teenagers spend their free time surfing, swimming, fishing, boating, skateboarding, riding bikes, working summer jobs, hanging around the docks, going to bonfires, exploring beaches and marshes, cruising around in old cars, going to parties, and spending time on the boardwalk.

Tourists come to the island every summer, bringing money and crowds with them, but the locals have their own world away from the vacationers.

THE PRETTIES

Nicklaus “Nick” Callahan

Nick is the unofficial leader of the Pretties. He's confident, calculating, and naturally commanding. He's grown up knowing that his family's money and reputation carry weight across the island.

Nick can be charming when he wants to be, but he knows exactly how much power his family name gives him. He's used to getting his way and expects people to listen when he speaks.

Lukas Bennett

Lukas is laid-back, charismatic, and usually the easiest Pretty to be around. He jokes constantly and rarely seems bothered by anything.

He loves the wealthy lifestyle—boats, parties, beach houses, expensive cars—but doesn't always think about what life is like for the Salties.

He's easygoing most of the time, though he'll quickly take his friends' side when they're involved in something.

Benjamin “Ben” Whitaker

Ben is the hothead of the group. He's competitive, proud, and quick-tempered, especially when someone challenges or embarrasses him in front of the other Pretties.

He's used to getting what he wants and hates being told no. Ben has no problem provoking Salties because he knows his family's money and reputation can protect him from most consequences.

Erik Sullivan

Erik is quieter and more observant than the others. He tends to watch a situation before deciding what to do.

He's intelligent and notices things the rest of the group sometimes miss. Erik enjoys being a Pretty and everything that comes with it, but he doesn't always agree with the way some of his friends treat the Salties.

Jackson “Jax” Montgomery

Jax is the reckless one. He loves parties, fast cars, expensive boats, and anything that gives him an adrenaline rush.

He's constantly looking for something exciting to do and doesn't always think about what might happen afterward. His family's wealth has protected him from consequences for most of his life, which has only made him more careless.

THE SALTIES

Bluey Parker

Bluey Parker grew up on the working-class side of the island and has known Finn, Danny, and River practically his entire life.

The four of them grew up together around the beaches, docks, back roads, and local hangouts. They're more like family than friends.

Danny is Bluey's older brother, and the two have always been extremely close. Danny has looked out for Bluey his entire life, while Bluey trusts his older brother more than almost anyone.

Bluey works at one of the island's local marinas, where he works on boats and handles the jobs nobody else wants. He cleans, repairs, carries equipment, scrubs decks, works around engines, hauls supplies, and gets stuck doing the dirty, greasy, exhausting work.

It's not glamorous, but Bluey is good with boats and knows his way around the marina. Because of his job, he knows the docks, boats, fishing crews, marina workers, and waterways better than almost anyone.

Personality

Bluey is relaxed, playful, stubborn, loyal, and fiercely protective of the people he cares about.

But Bluey hates the Pretties with a passion.

He has absolutely no patience for their entitled attitudes, expensive lifestyles, or the way they treat Salties like they're beneath them. He especially hates watching Pretties show off things they barely appreciate while Salties work themselves to exhaustion just to get by.

Bluey isn't impressed by money, family names, expensive cars, or boats. He refuses to kiss up to anyone simply because they're wealthy.

Around Finn, Danny, and River, however, Bluey is completely different. He jokes around, talks shit, laughs, and acts like himself.

Finn, Danny, and River are his family.

Finn Dawson

Finn is the nervous and jumpy one of the Salties.

Last summer, he was jumped by a group of Pretties, and since then he's been noticeably more cautious around them. He watches his surroundings and gets tense when he's alone around groups of Pretties, especially at night.

His friends know what happened and tend to keep an eye on him.

Finn is still part of the group and doesn't want to be treated like he's fragile. He trusts Bluey, Danny, and River more than anyone.

Danny Mercer

Danny is Bluey's older brother and the tough guy of the Salties.

He's protective, stubborn, and intimidating when he needs to be. He's usually the first person to step in when one of his friends is in trouble.

Danny refuses to back down simply because someone has more money or a better last name.

He's spent his whole life looking out for Bluey and considers Finn and River family too.

Beneath his tough exterior, Danny cares deeply about the other Salties and would do almost anything to protect them.

River Hayes

River is the chatterbox of the Salties.

He always has a rumor, story, joke, or piece of information ready to share. He seems to know everyone on the island and somehow always knows what's happening before everyone else.

River keeps the group laughing, although his nonstop talking can drive his friends crazy.

He's been friends with Bluey, Danny, and Finn since childhood and is completely comfortable around them. He knows their personalities, their habits, their history, and exactly how to annoy each of them.

The Social Divide

The Pretties and Salties are sworn enemies.

They attend the same school, visit the same beaches, drive the same roads, and live on the same small island, which means avoiding each other is nearly impossible.

The Pretties have money, family influence, expensive possessions, and social status.

The Salties have local knowledge, independence, hard-earned skills, strong friendships, and pride in where they come from.

Neither side wants to give the other any ground.

On this island, everyone knows one thing:

You're either a Pretty or a Salty.

authors note

This is basically inspired by The Outsiders and Outer Banks, just mixed together. I’ve been obsessed with the series and movies so I decided to make this. Enjoy!
