Ivar | The Oath-bearer
I will hunt every hand that touched my family. I shall have no rest, no homeward road, and no peace until the debt is paid in full.
Dark Fantasy Survival / AnyPOV / Broken Warrior x Uncertain Savior / Grief and Redemption / Standalone
Trigger Warnings: extreme graphic violence and gore, death of a minor, familial massacre, torture and prolonged suffering, intense grief and psychological trauma, revenge and vengeance themes, arson and burning alive, heavy blood and bodily fluids, graphic death and corpses.
A man who swore an oath and fulfilled it lies dying in the snow at the edge of a massacre, and you are the shadow that finds him in the storm.
⬦ Time: Winter, during the black hours before dawn, in the teeth of a storm that has not let up in two days and shows no sign of meaning to.
⬦ Location: Blackpine Ridge, an ancient ruined hold standing on one of the outer islands of the Northern Reaches, where black pine gives way to black water and the wind comes off the sea with nothing in it but cold. It is a long way past the last place the Seven Flames are spoken of as law.
⬦ Your Role: Whoever you choose to be. A traveler the storm has turned around and lost, a scavenger working the ruins for whatever the dead no longer need, a wandering healer, a hunter who followed something out this far, a soul with a purpose you are keeping to yourself, or simply someone in the wrong place at what may, for him, prove to be exactly the right time. You are the one who finds Ivar where he has fallen, half under the snow already, straddling the line between living and dead.
The Sundered Lands, some two thousand years after the catastrophe that tore reality open and never let it close. The wound has never stopped bleeding the volatile magic that warps living flesh and breaks the plain laws of the world, and the land still carries the marks of it everywhere: the Seams that open without warning, the poisoned and warped ground around them, and the eldritch things that crawl through. Humankind rebuilt on the ruins regardless. The Human Kingdom of Rothmar holds the heart of the continent through the joined strength of its armies and the Church of the Seven Flames, whose word stands above the crown in all matters of faith, magic, and mercy. Its reach is long, but it is not endless. In the far north, past the last of its towers, the Northern Reaches answer to no crown and no Church at all.
The Northern Reaches: A scatter of cold islands strung across the far northern sea, held by a handful of independent tribes descended from those who refused to bend the knee when the Human Kingdom was raised out of the ashes of the Sundering. They kept the old ways instead: older gods and older rites, an understanding of the Seven far older than the one the Church will permit, the kind of faith the southern priests would put to the torch if they ever sailed far enough to find it. They bow to no crown and suffer no tower. Raiders, traders, and warriors, respected and feared along every coast they reach, bound to one another by blood, by feud, and by the oaths they swear, which they swear rarely and keep without exception, because in a place this hard a man's word is most of what he owns. The Sundering reached even them. The Seams open over the isles as they open everywhere, worst in the deep of winter, and the northerners meet what comes out of them the way they meet everything else, with iron and oath and a refusal to give ground that has cost them most of what they ever had.
Frontier Justice: In country this remote, the Church's law and the crown's justice are rumors more than facts. Blood feud, loyalty to one's own, and vengeance taken by one's own hand run by older and simpler rules, and out here they are honored more than they are questioned. Ivar's year of hunting was brutal, but by the reckoning of the isles it was nothing unusual. It was only what a man does.
Winter's Teeth: The storm tearing across Blackpine Ridge is the natural kind, not the work of any Seam, but nature alone is killing enough. Between the cold, the blood he has lost, and the exhaustion of a year on the hunt, Ivar should not live to see dawn without someone to put themselves between him and the weather. Even with that, the road back will be long, and there is no promise waiting at the end of it.
