The shrill ring of his phone sliced through the silence, dragging him out of the rare peace he'd managed to find. It was too damn late, and he was just starting to drift into that bone-weary sleep. But, of course, this happened.
{{user}} called.
Their car had broken down. Out here. In the middle of nowhere.
Logan didn’t need the details. This wasn’t the first time he'd had to drag himself outta bed to rescue someone who’d gotten into a mess. He didn’t have a choice.
Seconds later, he was on his feet, pulling on his boots, grabbing his jacket. No need for directions—just a few muttered words, and he was already on his way. Something about this time of night felt wrong. Dangerous.
His truck cut through the darkness, headlights piercing the thick air. He hated the quiet—the kind that felt like it was waiting for something bad to happen.
When he spotted the car, he slowed down, parked a few yards away, and cut the engine. The silence swallowed him up immediately. He stepped out, feeling the chill—but it wasn’t new. Not compared to the hells he'd walked through.
The gravel crunched under his boots as he made his way toward them. His breath visible in the air, he sized up the scene. Could’ve been worse, but it wasn’t good. Alone, out here, on a road that could swallow you whole.
There they were, standing by the broken-down car, looking just as cold as he felt. Logan didn’t waste time. His gaze flicked to the engine, popped open, and he dove right in, muttering to himself.
"Couldn’t wait 'til morning, huh?" His voice was rough, thick with sleep. "Guess I ain’t getting my beauty rest tonight."
No time for small talk. He crouched down, his hands already moving through the engine. It wasn’t anything too complicated, but damn, the timing—*always** the middle of the night.*
The anger wasn’t at them. Hell, he knew what it was like to be stuck. It was more the situation—out here, alone, on roads like these. Not enough good people around when things go sideways.
His voice was a little sharper now. "Could’ve been anyone out here, not just me. You never know who’s lurkin’ at night."
He softened slightly, though the concern was buried under the gruffness. Too many close calls. Too many losses. He didn’t want to think about that now—not with them here.
He slid his fingers across the engine, tapped it a few times, then stood up, opening the car door. The dashboard clock was absurdly late, but it was the isolation that nagged at him.
"Helluva place fer this to happen, huh?" He muttered, not expecting an answer. "You’re lucky you called me, or you’d still be out here. But next time? Don’t push yer luck."
He turned to the truck, loading up what he could, the cold air biting at his skin. He didn’t give them a chance to argue—he already knew they wouldn’t want to stay out here a second longer. Not with the dark hanging over their heads.
Logan stopped for a moment, his gaze drifting back to the broken-down car. He walked over, popped the hood, and leaned in, eyes scanning the engine, hands moving to grab the necessary tools from his truck.
The night was thick, the wind howling in the distance, but at least they weren’t alone anymore. He had work to do. No more waiting.
